Homecoming is doing very well. Maybe not as much as some would have liked, but 300+ domestic is good money.
The only question mark is the foreign grosses. In the mcu this is about middle of the road. For Dr Strange it's great, Spider-Man not so much. It all comes down to the sequel.
The sequel has so much more going for it. 1 this was well liked after the third reboot 2 the sequel will follow infinity war 3 marvel produced sequels usually outperform their predecessor

I think it's doing good box-office wise but I'm not sure if it's going to be considered a slight disappointment at the same time too. Now, I realize that Marvel/Sony wanted to at least beat the Amazing Spider-Man films...but I'm wondering are they REALLY happy with the results so far?
Going back to WFTPOTA, I really am convinced that people were disappointed that there wasn't more action for the third installment. That would explain the big drops and the fact that it's only made like 80 million so far domestically, not to mention 180 million worldwide. Sadly, that's a big shock for most people since the previous two did so well.

There's been a few surprising ones. Planet of the Apes, Transformers, Alien etc
Power Rangers though really surprised me. It's domestic gross not so much but that it only made $142 million worldwide....I'd have thought it disappointing if it had doubled that amount.

The Star Trek movie. It made less than the Ghostbusters reboot.

This thread is for films of 2017, no offense. But it's cool if you wanted to mention the ones of last year too. Now The Dark Tower is underperforming...although alot of fans of the books are pissed off so it's understandable LOL. To be honest, I think a film like Life should've been released in October, of course some people probably thought it looked similiar to Alien IMO.

I'd probably go with War for the Planet of the Apes as well. Like you said though, the film was probably hurt by the fact that it didn't really have a whole lot of action in it, despite having "war" in the title. On a lesser note, Transformers: The Last Knight has also somewhat surprised me. While I always expected it to be the lowest grossing film in the series domestically, I didn't quite expect it to be struggling just to reach $600 million. Wouldn't someone have to see it to know that?

Alien: Covenant. The marketing campaign was fantastic and I thought there was a lot of hype behind it.

Alien: Covenant. Opened 10 million below expectations then dropped like a brick on it's second outing. And this despite the film getting generally positive reviews, but it seems the average moviegoer was much less forgiving than the critics were when it's typically the other way aroundYeah, I don't understand it. Personally, I really enjoyed it. 6.6 on IMDB? People just totally shit on this one. You'd think general/casual moviegoers would've liked it. Seems like a fun 2 hours to bust at the theater at the very least.

Wouldn't someone have to see it to know that? Not if word of mouth spreads about the lack of action. Or it's just not that popular of the series? You honestly think a bunch of independent critics all wrote the same thing – about there being a lack of action – and millions of people across the world all happen to read reviews from the same critics? I really like this series, but one of these scenarios is much more likely than the other

People don't seem to be interested in much outside of a few franchises. I liked Alien Covenant as well. I thought it was a nice step up from Prometheus.

Still, I thought more people would be excited to see the continuation of a once much loved franchise. It's a shame because we might never get to see Ridley wrap up his story.

Also, word of mouth doesn't exclusively refer to critic reviews.

I still say that, sadly, this series is not particularly popular. Look around this message board, at conventions, etc. How often do you hear people talking about this series? How often do you see merchandise for it?

I think the reason Covenant didn't do as well as Prometheus was....basically, alot of fans of the series didn't want to see Prometbeus 2 but with Aliens in it IMO. Remember, that's a pretty divided movie among Alien fans ever since it came out in 2012. They should've made the new Alien 3 instead. That would not have done any better. As much as I am a fan of (most of) the series, it's simply not overly popular. There are pockets of us, but not enough to sustain new movies.
