Here's my review of the film:

If you don't like spoken reviews, here are my general thoughts on it:
I think it's a little pointless to talk about acting, story, character development etc when it comes to this film, because the movie is pretty generic in regards to these things. There are two things that stand out for me with The Thing.
1) The special effects. This is the thing that really irks me, because the special effects were a massive missed opportunity. In the video above I showed a few stuff from behinds the scenes from the ADI crew where they showed off their practical effects for the movie. Some of it is just brilliant, and the film would have been so much better had they put those effects in the movie and had the director filmed them in a way that was effective. But the story goes that the studio suits decided to get rid of all the practical effects because modern day audiences were used to CGI and the practical effects would put them off (can't find the article but this is definitely the reason given by the studio). Now forgive me if I am the moron in the room, but if the effects unsettle audiences - well, isn't that the point?
On top of that they gave the guys who did the CGI effects that were the eventual replacement so little time that the results were...well, for those who have seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about. The effects were so bad it was funny, in a depressing kind of way. Ironic really, seeing as though the effects are one of the things the original movie is lauded for.
2) Its relationship to the 1982 movie. Before its release, there was confusion as to what exactly this film was – a remake, a sequel, a reboot. What?
When you watch this film you get the sense that it’s a pretty dire remake. Nothing special at all. But then (SPOILER) the end credits roll after all the hullabaloo and death and stuff and the credits are intercut with shots showing how all the dead characters end up – and it’s exactly (well, almost exactly) the same as how MacReady and co found the dead Norwegians, and thus the movie reveals its true nature – a prequel.
This, combined with the return of Ennio Morricone’s famously eerie score really blew me away. It elevated the film a few notches, but not quite enough for me to call it a good movie. Overall The Thing is one of those movies that makes me sad more than anything, simply because of the creative decision to remove the practical effects and replace these with subpar digital effects. 6/10
