Could this prove a success like Straight Outta Compton? It's gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews so far.

I think even silly white liberals that NEVER interact with anyone but other silly white liberals are bored with evil white folks movies. Straight Out of Compton had more going for it than evil whitey. Detroit doesn't seem to unless you're really into brits doing bad accents.
Also it's a given that critics will be insanely hyperbolic for any movie with this theme. Hence the "most important movie of our generation" tagline. Yes I know it's a "true" story.

Honestly I'm disappointed that the riots seem to be just a backdrop of this single incident that happened amidst the chaos.

Honestly I'm disappointed that the riots seem to be just a backdrop of this single incident that happened amidst the chaos. The riots started when cops shut down an illegal club serving alcohol and the cops were attacked when they tried to transport the suspects. Since the details of the incident was well verified, there is not enough room to try and spin it so the rioters appear heroic. Although I'm sure the movie will do it's best to make it seem that way. The Algiers hotel incident has numerous versions depending on who is telling what happened so it's easier to cherry pick who we are supposed to sympathize with.
