Any fans here? Stylish mystery series created by Eric Ambler. Sebastian Cabot was witty as a criminology professor. I'm a big Doug McClure fan, and Checkmate was where he established his Jim Garnerish persona, with self mocking humor a la Burt Reynolds. But oh that Anthony George... His voice is thin and nasal, and his line readings are monotonous. Universal must have had a warehouse full of male leads under contract in 1960 -- why on Earth was AG hired? Fortunately he doesn't completely ruin the show. I've only seen a handful of episodes -- with guest stars Peter Lorre, Jeffrey Hunter, Anne Baxter and even Charles Laughton. Like its Universal contemporary Wagon Train it got some remarkable guest stars, which I chalk up to the clout of studio honcho Lew Wasserman. Jack Benny did one, but the episode I'd really like to see stars Tony Randall as a homicidal disc jockey Not one but two TV Guide covers -- so why didn't it last?
