I would say, "The Body", in part because of how effective it conveyed death and grief. But part of my reasoning is, in a sense, not quite a fair assessment in that, though Buffy's death in "The Gift" was poignant and tragic, when it occurred in the series broadcast not only was her death at the end of the season completely spoiled in the press, but it was a foregone conclusion that by some means she would be back since the death occurred at the end of the run of the series on Fox and everyone knew that the show was coming back on UPN. So unless it was going to become "Faith, the Vampire Slayer" or something like that, there was no doubt that her death was not final. While such outside knowledge shouldn't take away from the drama within the story, in the end it does (and even for those who did not see the series during the original broadcast, the impact of her death is mitigated somewhat by the knowledge that there are two more seasons to go).

The Body. The way it was filmed, edited, it was not the usual Buffy episode and that was exactly what that episode needed. There was always death in Buffy, but it was always by vampires or other demons and now they are confronted with a death where they can't slay the bad guy, it was powerfull.

The Body. The Gift had a very sad, poignant ending, but the entirety of The Body is enveloped in grief.

The Body
Did not think The Gift was sad at all.

Never cried during either. And ::dodges rotten tomatoes:: I'm not a fan of The Body at all (Forever handled it better and the end scene is sadder than anything in The Body). It's self-indulgent and artsy-fartsy in a bad way. It's full of illogical things like Anya's speech coming from a mass-murderer who knows all about death from causing it for a millennia and the fact that Xander put his fist through drywall in a way that is seriously improbable. A large chunk of the episode is Willow whining about her shirt and making it all about herself.
However, I cried buckets the first times I watched A Hole in the World, Shells and Not Fade Away.
I *almost* leaked a tear once for Lullaby.

The Body is almost ... unrelenting ... from beginning to end, thereby maintaining a truly claustrophobic atmosphere. Heightening that discomfort are the various emotional triggers the episode manages to strike. Despite the fact that such triggers vary greatly from person to person, The Body seems to hit so many of them that no viewer is spared or left unscathed.
Also, isn't it the only BTVS episode in the series with absolutely no music, IIRC?

Actually, I don't think that is unfair at all. Since we are discussing emotions, the knowledge that the show will continue does not allow the viewer to feel the same depth of grief. It is sort of a real-world suspension-of-disbelief destroyer.

It is sort of a real-world suspension-of-disbelief destroyer. FWIW, after the original broadcast, there were a lot of people posting on the Bronze (at the time, the official board of BTVS) clearly did think that the death was somehow final in spite of the knowledge that Season 6 was on the way. There was a lot of hand-wringing, questions of how the show would go on without her, etc. Though several of us kept saying that there was no way that Buffy wouldn't be back in season 6, one person's post (I wish I knew who to credit), I thought, said it all. It was something on the order of, "I don't know what all the fuss is about -- it's not like she hasn't died before."

I started on the Bronze! Drew Goddard even answered on of my questions. (No matter what anyone else thinks -- to this day, I find that extremely cool!)
I still post there when I can. Did you ever go to a PBP? I didn't but being new to both the show and posting boards as a whole, I was more than happy!
Did you catch the shout-out to the Bronze in Homecoming ?

Did you catch the shout-out to the Bronze in Homecoming ? Since I don't know what a PBP is, I'm guessing that I never went to one. As for Homecoming, I wouldn't have been on the Bronze at that point since I only started watching Buffy starting with season 3 and I'm pretty sure that it was later in the season. By the time that I finally got around to watching Homecoming on the DVDs I doubt that I would have even remembered the Bronze. My favorite memories of the Bronze were the rare occasions when Joss would drop by to post about something. I always imagined that he must have been drinking and decided to go online because he was usually rambling and rather incoherent, but Whedon, even when incoherent, is often hilarious.

I always imagined that he must have been drinking and decided to go online because he was usually rambling and rather incoherent, but Whedon, even when incoherent, is often hilarious. I started with S3, too. The Wish was my first episode. That's a tough one to start with! I was playing catch up forever. You probably remember that at that time the episodes hadn't been released in full. I was just watching whatever random episodes I could find, in any order I found them. For instance, the second episode I watched was Phases. I was utterly lost until I sheepishly admitted to a friend that I really enjoyed BTVS and found out he was a fan. He filled me in on all the broad strokes (and then the subtler nuances as needed) and was the one who told me about the Bronze. Needless to say, I was hooked!
I enjoyed when Joss and the other VIPs showed up, too. [ Hey, have I mentioned that Drew Goddard posted an answer to me? I might just put that on my gravestone. Only as a postscript, of course; I'm not a braggart. Okay, I'm sorry -- I'll stop being silly now. Maybe... ] Joss was funny in that very particular way of his. I love how he always forgot his password for the site! I never pictured him drinking as he posted but to quote Oz: Actually, it explains a lot. Of course now I will never be able to read a Joss Whedon quote without picturing him in his jammies with a nice glass of something next to him. (Somehow the jammies just got folded in to my mental image. Let's let it be our little secret, m'kay?)***
The PBP was the Posting Board Party. It was a yearly gathering of the members of the Bronze. They'd invite the VIPs and they would actually attend. I know a few people who went and they had a blast! I never went, though -- I just enjoyed posting....
In Homecoming, on Buffy's board of her opponents' strengths and weaknesses one of the girls has "PB crazed" (or something like that). That's the shoutout to the Bronze, as I heard it. (It might have even been in a commentary.) All I can recall is that I heard about it much later than the episodes aired. (As I understand it, Big Bad also came from the Bronze, but I really cannot remember how I heard that or how reliable the source way.)
*** Actually, this old Far Side cartoon is what sprang to mind:

Say, didn't Drew Goddard once answer one of your posts? You think you started out confused about Buffy -- I got a friend of mine interested in the show when the broadcast show was currently in S5. However, two stations were showing earlier seasons in syndication; one was in S1 and the other in S3. He started watching all three seasons at the same time. For quite awhile after I would get all these questions from him: So, what happened to Oz?; Willow likes girls now?; What happened to Angel; Who is Anya?; etc. It must have really been confusing for him. It was only a little better for me -- I started with S3, but I managed to see S1 and S2 because of the syndicated reruns. Until I got caught up I was nearly as confused but it was a little easier because there were more MOTW episodes in S1 and S2 so there weren't as many continuity issues to deal with. Besides, I spent plenty of time online researching the bits I didn't understand. (loved the cartoon)

The Body for me hands down. I can't even watch it again. I haven't even watched it since the first time I saw it, but I still remember it. I probably should watch it again, but I would have to get geared up for it lol.

The Body. The saddest part was when Buffy was telling Dawn with all her classmates watching.

The Body. I came to Buffy late and when I saw this episode it was like I lost my father all over again. I felt exactly the same way.

Hands down The Body. That episode had everything shock, denial, grief, support, acceptance, fear, anger, helplessness. Buffy's emotions got me but that episode also highlighted how central Joyce was to everyone in the group. Anya's confusion was poignant, how some people don't know what to do or how to help was so real.

"The Body," ugh. It would be sad at anytime, but saw it with my mom about two weeks after my stepdad passed away. Bad timing. Brilliant though.
