A Russian agent working for Trump gave him the wrong envelope.

His passing the error on for Dunaway to take wasn't very chivalrous, IMO.

A woman (journalist?) who had been backstage during the whole snafu was later interviewed at one of the post-Oscar parties, and she said that Warren refused to hand over the envelopes after the ceremony ended. I don't know if he later handed the envelopes over or if he took them with him. It's possible he may have taken them with him because I think I saw a clip of him at one of the parties with the red envelope still in his hand. I don't know what his reason was for wanting to keep the envelope(s). His wife (Annette Bening) is a member of the Academy's board of governors. maybe he wanted to consult with her first on what to do?

What did Beatty do that was dropping the ball?
He was given the wrong envelope. That's not his fault. He realised something was wrong, which is why he didn't read out the winner. Again, this isn't his fault. If he'd had more time to think about it he might even have realised what had happened and called for help, avoiding the whole mess.
Dunaway thought he was fooling around, took the card, didn't catch the mistake, and read out the wrong movie. Something Beatty never did.
Beatty was the only one there who didn't screw up.

Beatty was the only one there who didn't screw up. It's not like the card just said La La Land, it said ' Emma Stone - La La Land - Best Actress' He - and Faye - should have noticed that and realized it was the wrong card. They both screwed up. But in their defense, they're ancient.

He DID notice that, which is why he didn't actually read it out.
Beatty did nothing whatsoever wrong.

You think he did nothing wrong even though he was like 'Hmmm this is clearly the wrong card, I'll let Faye read it and take the heat!'?

You think he did nothing wrong even though he was like 'Hmmm this is clearly the wrong card, I'll let Faye read it and take the heat!'? No, because he didn't realise exactly what what was going on. He was looking at it, and almost certainly thinking something like "hang on, this doesn't look right... is this actually the right card or not? Am I just making a mistake? What on Earth..." Meanwhile she takes it off him, barely looks at it, and goes "La La Land!" She screwed up. The guys behind the scenes screwed up. Beatty did not.

No, because he didn't realise exactly what what was going on. That's where he screwed up! Why are you so intent on absolving him? It was his responsibility to read the card and announced the winner. The card was wrong, clearly he was at least suspicious, but instead of saying there's a problem he just handed it to Faye. How the fuck is that 'not screwing up'? The only right thing he could have done would be to say the card was wrong, which he didn't do. Therefore, he fucked up.

No, because he didn't realise exactly what what was going on. That's where he screwed up! That's not a screw up. Because the thread is accusing him when he did nothing wrong. No, she took it from him. You're blaming him when his alleged "screw up" consisted of him taking a few seconds to try and work out what had gone wrong. That's not a screw up, no matter how much you want it to be. If Dunaway had left him the hell alone it's entirely likely that in a few more seconds he would have realised what happened and called somebody onto the stage to sort it out. He didn't get the chance because of the silly woman. Again : Beatty was the only official person there who DIDN'T make any mistake.

Yes, it is. It said 'Best Actress' not 'Best Picture' and he failed to point that out. That FAILURE is the screw up. He handed it to her! Not to mention he was taking forever. Sheesh it's like you're trying to be stupid.

You're just repeating already debunked points, which is a waste of time.
No matter how determined you are to spin what happened, the fact remains the Beatty was the only one to keep his head and not screw up.

You're repeating the same nonsense. He had the wrong card. He saw that he had the wrong card. He did not say he had the wrong card. Ergo, he fucked up. End of story.

What a shit-show. Good thing the awards are utterly meaningless and, outside of Los Angeles, nobody gives a flying fig what a bunch of preening old self-congratulating dorks in an auditorium think of the second-rate distraction fodder they served up to the public for another foul year. What was the question?
