It was a fun film to watch. Worth the price of admission and then some for me. I really enjoyed it.
It's a Star Wars Story, just like the title read. It was a nice tidy action packed ride with no real loose ends to worry about.
It's the type of stand alone that many pined for after episode VII came out. I'm glad that people who really feel that films must be able stand alone got what they wanted, and I got a very enjoyable film.
That said... it's going to be wonderful to me to get another taste of the messy, hole ridden, episodic, cliff hanging, sequel trilogy, non stand alone episodic soap opera this December.
The anthology films plus the saga had me worried about overexposure at first. But I think with such a diverse fanbase, that this arrangement may just work well.

Agreed. It enhanced the preexisting six-film saga rather than undercutting and detracting from it like TFA did.

It's act 1 of a 3 act play spread out over 3 films. This first act needs to set the scene. build the tension. And from many of the reactions I see, tension is absolutely built. I have hope that by the end of act 3 that things will be "made right". We'll see.

I also dislike the direction they've gone. It can't be undone, in my eyes, but maybe these side stories will improve. One thing I didn't need in Rogue One was hearing "the force" uttered a million times, nor did I need to see 3PO or R2.. Jimmy Smitts was welcome.

It was alright. More than alright actually. I don't remember anything from the first half of that movie except what happened on Jeda. The rest of first half of that movie should've been rewritten. It got to the actual battle to steal the Death Star plans in the second half. Then it got awesome!
