given the wrong envelope? Warren seemed baffled by what was on the card. He even glanced into the envelope to see if there was another card inside and Faye thinks he's kidding around and looks at the card and reads "La La Land". Did somebody back stage screw up?

So we now know that Pricewaterhousecoopers screwed up back stage. But what's with the dual envelope system? Were they afraid somebody would abscond with the results?

In a press release from Price Waterhouse they said they always have two briefcases each with a complete set of winning envelopes taken to the Oscars by two different Price Waterhouse employees. Just in case one of them doesn't arrive on time to the Oscar ceremony for some reason (like LA traffic). But it seems that if they did both arrive and were there from the beginning of the ceremony, they should pick one briefcase from which to pull the envelopes and leave the other locked for the duration of the ceremony. That would have kept this mix-up from happening.

Just in case anyone is still wondering/cares . . . I read somewhere - and this seems pretty odd to me - that the accountants stand on either side of the stage as the side from which each presenter will enter isn't always a lock. Of course, each is supposed to put aside his/her copy of an envelope when its duplicate is handed to a presenter by his/her counterpart. It seems that as Brian Culliney (sic?) was busy taking and then tweeting a photo of Emma Stone backstage after her win, he neglected to put aside his copy of "her" card. (The guy had apparently been sending such tweets throughout the show; all were pretty quickly deleted.) The accountants are also required to memorize the names of all winners *and step forward immediately* to correct any erronious announcements made by presenters; they obviously dropped the ball bigtime in that regard. I felt bad/cringey for the La La Land peeps, being allowed to keep on giving emotional speeches under such very awkward circumstances. Bravo to the producer who made the announcement and snatched the (right) card from Beatty to hold up for the camera!
