This was basically a genre back in the early 70s, and some were pretty good like "Shaft"....I guess virtually all of them are now in the "cult" category. Any favorites?

I haven't seen a Blaxploitation film. What would be a good one to watch as an introduction to the genre?

Coffy. One of the most popular and successful Blaxploitation flicks. Pam Grier in her prime.

I haven't seen a Blaxploitation film. What would be a good one to watch as an introduction to the genre? As I said in the OP, I think "Shaft" is best. Unlike other films considered blaxploitation it stands more on its own and appeals to more demographics. Richard Roundtree plays a very cool detective, sort of a black Sam Spade. The sequels are not as good. In "Shaft's Big Score" Roundtree plays sort of a black James Bond, then in "Shaft in Africa" sort of a black Tarzan.

Out of all the one I've see, my favorite is Hit! with Billy Dee Williams.

Wow, I wasn't even aware that Hit! got a blu-ray release. How I saw it was streaming on an On-Demand service on cable (which unfortunately no longer exists). Anyway, you're in for a treat when you watch it, heysweden.

JD's Revenge --yeah what is up with the close ups of slaughtered cattle? Big close ups on heads and dead eyeballs.
Anyway Blacula is first for me. Dr. Black and Mr Hyde by the same director has a great Bernie Casey performance (especially when he tries to guilt trip a prostitute into taking his serum).
Black Belt Jones The Beast Must Die Across 110th Street Truck Turner Sugar Hill Coffy Abby Hit Man Cleopatra Jones

...a modern Blaxploitation film is "Black Dynamite" which is hilarious. It includes an unforgettable scene with (gasp) Captain Kangaroo...!!! This film is probably meant to be a modern parody on the genre...
