Similar fate to Blade Runner '82.
If it's very good, it may find ppl via home release. That's tougher though in a digital world yes?

I don't get all this "It's a flop" chanting at all (and I think there may be some agenda behind it I wasn't able to decrypt so far). www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=bladerunnersequel.htmIt may be that it didn't fulfil the expectations completely but it's not our job as cinephiles to look on that movie like Gordon Gekko! And there will be some more money (DVD and Bluray sells, TV placement sells) to go By the way: I'm sure that the old "Blade Runner" was NOT a flop, too - if You consider all of the revivals this movie had in the mid 80ies - mid 90ies in cinema, video and TV! And while we are at it - Valerian was definitely not a flop either: www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=valerian.htm

Neither of these will come anywhere close to that.

Too bad if it's a flop. It's a great film and a wonderful follow up to the original. I'm not a huge Ryan Gosling fan but he did a stand up job in this film. I think it could have possibly done better if there was a general short (1 or 2 day) release of the BR Final Cut a week or two before 2049 came out. Might have made some new fans.

In the end it didn’t disappoint (most of) the viewers and that’s all that really matters.

I think it could have possibly done better if there was a general short (1 or 2 day) release of the BR Final Cut a week or two before 2049 came out. Might have made some new fans. I was pleasantly surprised with this Blade Runner sequel and went to see it twice. Box office is not always the measure of an excellent and layered presentation. BR 2049, pretty much ticked many boxes for me. It might have been long; but none of it appeared like wasted and superfluous time. I totally agree with you. I was entirely captivated throughout the entire film. I wasn't a huge BR fan going into this, I enjoyed it, but the sequel made me love the original even more and I believe that 2049 will go down as a classic in its own right (and merits). Beautifully shot, and all of the actors (including Ford) were totally doing way more than just phoning it in. I've been critical of Ford in some of this latter films due to that feeling that he doesn't care all that much about the role he's playing, but in this film he was like he was from the 1980s.

However, I don't think Villeneuve isn't a big name director. He may not be as famous as Nolan, but especially after last year's Arrival I think he has gotten a lot of attention. Also, I'm under 30 and I care about Blade Runner and I know enough friends who also care. I think the main problem is more that they expected everyone to know Blade Runner (like Star Wars) and blindly buy tickets, but forgot that a significant part of the general moviegoers hasn't seen the original.
