The film still has a bad reputation that the award fails to rescue it from. It was panned on all fronts. In what way does a technical award make that go away? Your still acting as if the audience and critical perceptions are what drives the industry behind the scenes.

Your still acting as if the audience and critical perceptions are what drives the industry behind the scenes. Even if we don't, the win gains them nothing. They made a film that will always be remembered as a mess. That will never go away. Even if they make a sequel, they'll have to change their strategy for its production, else risk not getting lucky a second time with the box office returns. "Best Makeup" gets them nothing. They still have to fix what went wrong next time around. This is not a victory for them.

So tell us what all the studio execs are saying about the win?

...Are you seriously trying to tell me the critical and audience reception of a film is a non-factor?

...Are you seriously trying to tell me the critical and audience reception of a film is a non-factor? Everything is a factor, even a mess of a movie winning an Oscar regardless of the catagory, is a factor. Especially within the studio scene. A movie can be terrible but if it wins an Oscar, that means something in the industry.

On one hand, winning an award in your chosen field should be a point of pride thus a reason to brag. On the other hand, the Oscars has become such a pointless circle jerk that it gives it's most important award not based on quality or even popularity but instead because the protagonist is a non white guy who likes having sec with other men.
It is quite the conundrum.

The directing, the writing, and everything else that mattered about was universally hated by the public they released it to. This Oscar win changes nothing. They HAVE to adjust everything based on the reception the film got.

oh calm down, you've spent 4 pages here bickering that the Oscar win doesn't matter, but maybe it does a little too much too you. besides from now on people will say "the Oscar winning film Suicide Squad" in jest, they'll chuckle, say "whatever" and move on.

The make-up was very good, but then again the make-up department are usually on form.

Not really. The Oscar win doesn't matter. I'm just annoyed with people who continue to argue with me about long after the topic should have just died.

It absolutely does boil down to public perception. If they don't make us happy, they don't get money.

But not only public perception alone. And especially not within the industry where the awards matter to movie and the owners of the movie.

Do you really think they can make a similar mess of a film and expect returns on their investment a second time? I was in no hurry to revisit the Suicide Squad after I left the theater and many, many people felt the same way, too. That matters far, far more than a single win for some technical aspect of the opus.

I went to see SS and I could hear the teens behind me singing to the songs, and again my cousin who dislikes the genre loved SS.
