I don't know what "Gothic Americana" is, but as far as alt.country goes:
Wilco/Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown Old 97s Gourds Alejandro Escovedo
I also like some "Cowpunk" bands of the '80s: Beat Farmers Long Ryders Silos - kind of a transitional band, half Cowpunk and half alt.country. But their debut album came out three years before Uncle Tupelo

Probably not the standard definition but I consider alt country to be anything not in the mainstream of the genre.
