I think it might have been the competition from Spider-Man and Dunkirk that caused it to underperform, because those two films ended up making big money

I guarantee one of the main reasons was the fact that trailers made it look like an action film...but people were disappointed that it was more dramatic and 'boring'. Basically, they were expecting more action and since the marketing lied, audiences realized what the actual film is and told others not to see it. That is probably why it underperformed IMO.

But, if they'd used the trailers to say "this is a slower, more dramatic film with less action than previous films", then they would have made no money at all, because we all want to see apes fighting humans.

That is a good point too. I mean, either way they marketed it...the film wasn't gonna do as well because like you said, audiences want action besides the effects and acting IMO. Anyway, it's probably the most powerful and dramatic of the three movies in terms of story but also not the film people were expecting based on the title/trailers IMO. I haven't seen WFTPOTA yet and despite the disappointing fact that there's not much action...I still know it looks really good regardless.

The word of mouth was what prevented people from seeing it

Because its a slow, boring, long movie that drags and has a terrible plot.
Have 2 overlapping stories take place after the opening sequence, one showing the human side gathering an army and a plan to destroy apes. The other side, have Cesar and the apes preparing for the worst. Then during the 3rd act, have a qar actually between the apes and humans for the fate of the planet and show the audience how Apes are more intelligent and powerful than humans that they deserve the throne of the earth. That would have made double the money. None of this wishy washy, sentimental nonsense we were fed throughout the whole film along with the cheap virus sub plot.

I for one loved War for the Planet of the Apes, it was probably my favorite of the summer sequels but my favorite summer action film was the other big ape movie Kong: Skull Island, and here's why. I drove to the theater, I got popcorn and I watched a weird, funny, star riddled anti-war movie about a 100' ape smashing helicopters and beating up monsters, and it only took up 2 hours of my life. My God, I am having trouble bringing myself to seeing these 2 hour 20 minute plus action/adventure movies anymore. It's uncomfortable, it's stressful, do I eat before, or do I buy snacks, I have to take a piss, I check my watch, there's still like 90 minutes left, do I get up, do I hold it? Someone keeps texting me, now they're calling. Is it work? There's still like an hour left now. I'm thirsty, good thing I bought this massive souvenir cup, but now I have to piss again and there's like 45 minutes left. When you factor in commute back and forth, getting there a few minutes early to get tickets, maybe getting some lunch before or after, sitting through trailers, then the movie I've invested 3-4 hours to seeing a damn movie. I really don't mind long movies, I love a long prestige picture or epic adventure. But now every summer movie is an epic. In fairness, many are good. I loved War for Apes and Guardians 2, and I'm sure I'll love Last Jedi, but then when it gets to something like Kingsman 2 and I see that 2 hour 20 minute runtime, I say no, sorry, this is where I draw the line, I liked your movie from a few years ago, but I'm not going to let you drive a stake into the heart of my day off.

This exactly. I liked it but it's not what the previews advertised.

False advertisement. There was no war, just a backyard skirmish.
