THE LONGEVITY OF TWD -As far as the longevity of, “The Walking Dead” is concerned, I am hoping and praying for, “Gunsmoke” like numbers. For those of you who don’t remember, ”Gunsmoke” it was a long running American radio and television western series that was the inspiration for, “Star-Trek”. Airing first on the radio, it ran from 1952 to 1961. -It also ran as a CBS TV series (Starring James Arness) from 1955 to 1975. In total, that is a whopping 23 year run for the entire franchise. I don’t know about you folks, but I want to see Carl (..and at least some of the team!) get old. -They could show it, you know…? -I see TWD franchise continuing and running for years & years and becoming so ingrained in American & world culture, that in a decade or so, Rick and the Scooby Gang’s faces will be even more recognizable than the faces of many presidents... This isn’t just wishful thinking. -This could actually happen... ...and that’s all she wrote.

Given how little time the main cast are on screen, and the less than it used to be back in Gunsmoke's day number of episodes per season, I don't think the actors would be averse to sticking around for a bunch more years unless they just get bored with doing the show.

Well... Living through the 60' & 70's, we had to sometimes wait 5 to 10 years between good zombie flicks. With TWD & Z-nation still producing episodes, I feel like a hot hog in cool mud!

I don't know if I can see that happening. The shows base audience is growing weaker, as the shows quality has been in decline since almost it's inception. there is a distinct possibility that this show would have grown completely irrelevant by next year. AMC has done everything in their power to beat this dead horse I can't help but think that will lead to its demise. Not with bang, but a whimper.

I'm not getting the sense that TWD momentum is dying down thus far. (Except on message boards, by some). I think it has a few years yet. I don't see it lasting decades, though. This show is all about characterizations by an outstanding bunch of actors, who take the job quite seriously. THAT is what makes this show fantastic and its 'sister show', FearTWD sh*t. Those people are drones just phoning it in. If that show makes it two more seasons, I will be very surprised. TWD overall plot , the walkers and infection are just backdrop for the show. The real story, of course, is the people.

This franchise is running on fumes at this point. Not at all. There is plenty of material to use.

They are not out of material. If They follow the comic, they would take maybe another 4 years to catch up to the comic, (assuming they stretch the stories out the way they have been). It's really a question of how long the actors want to stay on, and how can the writers make any of this interesting for the viewers. Honestly, I am getting sick of things being stretched out soooo long, and so little plot progress in so many shows. I see the rest of this season MAYBE getting to the beginning of All Out War, but maybe not even then. All Out War taking all of season 8, time jump in season 9, Negan in jail, the communities join together to create a new society, (How boring will that be?) Season 10 full intro to the Whispers, season 11- Whisperers war. I mean I can spare an hour or so a week to watch, but how many others will tire and give up?

If they could bring in newer compelling actors to gradually replace the originals, the show can continue for many many years. I think the show can go on fine without Rick. Most of the originals are gone anyway.

This isn’t just wishful thinking. -This could actually happen... ...and that’s all she wrote. The problem is this. TV is very different than it was 60+ years ago. There were 3 channels. ABC, CBS, and NBC. You had maybe 10 hit shows in the 1950s. There wasn't much competition. So people watched a show out of bordem, they didn't have 1) Internet 2) Unlimited TV series and channels/apps 3) Streaming devices 4) Video Games 5) and other various forms of Movies, Blu-Ray, and unlimited media options. So they only had Radio, TV, and Theatre. You may have had 3 movies playing at the Cinema down the street. So a TV show could last that long back then. Plus, the actors weren't trying to start a movie career or play something else. They looked at acting on that series as a full time job, like working 20+ years as a teacher, or cop.

Oh now, the problems you mention only matter if both "TWD" and "Fear" fail at the same time... -Plus their could be other spin-offs... The animated version of, "TWD" hasn't even been released yet. I'm not necessarily saying that, "TWD" show itself will last that entire duration of time... But TWD Universe sure as shit could! -And just remember... Each and every season the franchise gets a new influx of 14 to 16 year old boys that still haven't been exposed to the virus!!

I wanted this show to go on at least long enough to get through the Whisperers War, but now I don't know. I would like to see it go on if they got new writers who could improve the show. If they don't, maybe they should end it after the war with the Saviors? I don't want to see it just get crappier and crappier.

I really enjoyed this last episode! Call me greedy, but I want MORE episodes to consistently be that good! Hopefully, with only three episodes left this season, and "War" starting next season, things will pick up! It has been all these "filler" episodes that have been souring my enjoyment, when they bring the show to a screeching halt. And they are NOT really doing any character development at this stage, IMO.

I don't think more is better when it comes to TV shows. Often times shows will drag on long after they have peaked. I think TWD is starting to reach that point, tbh. I still like it, but I do think the Negan/All Out War story line will be the peak of the show. I can see the ratings declining after that point.

I agree with annabanana...more is not always better. Too many shows once considered some of tv's best serialized drama shows when they first appeared kept going on too long and destroyed their initial legacy..(ex. Dexter, True Blood, ER, Weeds, 24, Rescue Me..to name a few)..And despite people always screaming for more deaths..the more original characters lost the more diluted a show always becomes. I can think of no show that ever thrived after losing most or all of it's original characters..Of course, those characters that came during the "honeymoon" period are usually considered along with the original cast...such as Maggie and Michonne in the case of TWD.
TWD has had its peaks and valleys all along. But it does seem to rely more and more now on filler and dragging things out too long .. I still think it has a little more under its belt but it's not limitless..They should bring things to a finish in the next couple of seasons..The comics may go on forever and meander with no direction but the show cannot sustain itself indefinitely and not dilute itself beyond repair.
Or it could go on and on and be one of those shows everyone has mostly forgotten about and you get a little surprised when you discover that it's still on tv. Always sad for shows that started with such promise.

After the all-out war with the Saviors, they should consider breaking completely with the comic and beginning a final story arc (which could last several seasons but would wrap up the show). Something big. Perhaps involving a scientist who basically is what Eugene claimed to be, and the remnants of military forces and governments trying to bring an end to the disaster and reboot civilization. Some aggressive world leaders might decide this was a great opportunity to be rid of their enemies for good and ensure that they were the ones to remake the world. Rick and the gang from Alexandria find themselves caught in the middle of all this. We'd get a couple of seasons of wall-to-wall insanity with some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. Happy endings are tough after all that's happened, but you could finish on an up note with humanity's future secure once again. Maybe we'd get to see old man Carl many years later telling the story to his grandkids. I vote for Kurt Russell (wearing his Snake Plissken eyepatch) to put in a cameo in the series finale.
