"Sometimes it's good to be a cop."Danny Muldoon (John Candy) is a lonely middle aged cop who still lives with his overprotecting, old time, rule stricted mother Rose (Maureen O'Hara). Everyday he gets to listen in about the share horror of being in a relationship by his best friend and partner Sal (James Belushi), but Danny still dreams of finding the right one. And when he begins to take notice of the shy cosmetician at the local funeral home, Theresa Luna (Ally Sheedy) his life suddenly looks a bit more on positive side. But that doesen't last long though, as Danny has to choose between the two women in his life, and his mother Rose are not all that happy about seeing her irish boy ending up with the local sicilian girl. One of Candy's more underrated films, or perhaps forgotten films and his last collaboration with his good friend John Hughes. Only the Lonely was directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes, which also includes a solid cast with John Candy, Maureen O'Hara, Ally Sheedy, James Belushi and Anthony Quinn. The film was losely based on the 1955 classic Marty and while it does have som very good, funny and romantic scenes, somewhere along the way it felt like it switched into becoming almost a TV made film at the end. Specially music wise (not counting in the great use of Roy Orbison, Van the Man or Etta James) but the main score by Maurice Jarre which sounded very tame and not very creative, like it was being made in the last second or so. Anyway, I like this film, and even though it might not be on the same page as other of Hughes/Candy's productions it is however a cozy and cute romantic comedy that sadly are not too often talked about these days.

It's a nice little rom-com;not trying to reinvent the wheel. I especially appreciate it for its casting of John Candy and Ally Sheedy, two normal but likable enough leads.

I saw it on the recommendation of a friend when it first came out. I think I reminded him of John Candy's character. We were about the same age. I liked it, but I think it is as much a drama as a romantic comedy. I seem to remember John Candy commenting how it was nice to play a normal guy for a change. It was nice to see Maureen O'Hara in her last theatrical film after a 20 year hiatus.
