Is this an elaborate prank? TEXT: Okay, well, we didn’t see this one coming. Warner Bros. and DC are bringing us an origin movie for none other than classic, ageless Batman villain the Joker. Deadline reports that Todd Phillips of The Hangover and 8 Mile’s Scott Silver are co-writing a script for the developing project, and Phillips will direct and produce the movie alongside Martin Scorsese. Yes, that Martin Scorsese. Deadline’s report also includes this ominous tidbit: “This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.” We don’t know yet what kind of origin the film will include, if it’ll go with a familiar comic arc or if Phillips and Silver will try something wholly new. Deadline writes that “isn’t part of any other iteration,” so don’t expect a Ledger- or Nicholson-style Joker for this go-round. The movie will occur in the same DCEU, but Jared Leto, who played the villain in last year’s Suicide Squad, will not reprise the role for this movie. They’re thinking of going with someone younger. The origin film is planned to be a “gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City” that’s meant to feel more like a Scorsese movie from that era (something like Taxi Driver or Raging Bull) than the DC movies we’ve come to expect. So that’s something new and different, and if Phillips can pull it off, potentially cool. There’s no official word on where this will fit in with DC’s upcoming schedule. screencrush.com/joker-origin-movie-martin-scorsese/

I hope Scorsese decides to direct this himself.

...wha... ...wh-wh-wh-wh-wh... .................................................................................... ...That's it. I give up. I'm done with the DCEU. To anyone who tries to tell me to keep giving it chances: SHUT UP!

I wish they would just keep their focus on DCEU for now.

i don't get why is Scorsese involved in this. I mean, he's like one of the gretest directors of all time, why eould he bother with a Joker movie instead of making his own movies? ok, he's only a producer but still..

My guess would be that he knows there's a lot of money to be made in it. Agreed, though, it is bizarre that they're doing this and that he's involved.

Henry Hill: You're really funny. You're really funny.
The Joker: What do you mean I'm funny? You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
Henry Hill: You ARE a clown. Here, take a look in the mirror.
The Joker: Oh right! I forgot. Never mind.

At 75, he knows he's not going to make many more films and wants that big score before retirement. He's barking up the wrong alley, though, with a Joker origin story. If he absolutely HAS to do a Batman-related property, he might be better off making a movie about Jason Todd's tenor as a solo vigilante crime fighter taking on the Gotham mob. That would at least be close-ish to his style of movie.

"This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters." Yep, sounds like it's not. "I’m told that the intention is to make an origin story that isn’t part of any other iteration." Why not just take after The Killing Joke?
