I thought the original was a pretty good b-movie and fascinating in its mid 50s era paranoia. But I only saw that film once.
The 1978 version is near excellent, with four super likable characters. Jeff Goldblum is just a bit of a flake, but Donald Sutherland (who is one of my favorite actors) and Brooke Adams are solid. And then there's Veronica Cartwright, who needs no words. Nobody can express mortal fear like the Goddess Veronica, both here and in the next year's "Alien" (where her fear is even more escalated) and in the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" and 13 year old walks away with the best acting honors.
And following this praise, there is nobody who can scream like Miss Cartwright. I'm a big fan. 😁

Abel Ferrara's 1993 version is best forgotten. It reduces the '78 version's subtext to "military is bad ok" and has some really bad acting too.
I finally got around to seeing that version a few months back, it was okay but the one thing (one thing?) that bothered me was how there was never any struggle for them not to fall asleep, presumably they stay awake for days trying to get out and finally escaping, and it's just not even acknowledged. Even the 70s version mentioned taking speed to stay awake.
