Growing up without cable tv in my neck of the woods, we relied on network television for movies. My favorites were The Wizard of Oz, The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur. They were played once a year and I always looked forward to seeing them.

Wizard of Oz on TV in the 60s. People came over to watch with us because we had a color TV.

The first classic movie I remember seeing was "Bringing Up Baby." I think I was about 7 or so. Anyway, it was the first movie I recognized as being an "old" movie.

It was probably Pinocchio. But to be honest, I can't remember exactly.

I remember being taken to see A Night at the Opera when I was about five I think, that was probably the first. Probabaly at the National Film Theatre, but may have been the Academy in Oxford Street, can't remember now. I thought it was very funny.

Probably Psycho, my dad's was always talking about it and is a big Hitchcock fan. Although Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from '37 would be the actual first I suppose

I think it was Barnen från Frostmofjället (1945). Found it incredibly dull, though.

One of my first memories of watching a classic movie would have to be King Kong on tv with my mother when I was a child. It was the original I believe since it was in b&w. I don't remember much other than that! Always loved classic movies though.

Being an older guy everything I saw as a kid is now a classic film. Does that count? The first movies I remember seeing were Disney animation such as "Bambi", "Dumbo" and "Pinnochio". BB ;-) My first two movies at a German movie theater were "Lili" with Leslie Caron and a German movie which nobody on this board would know, but Lilo Pulver (One Two Three) and Carlos Thompson (Valley of the Kings) were in it. It was called "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart". I was 5 years old. This was in 1960/1961. www.imdb.com/title/tt0051200/reviewsI watched "Bambi" a few years later and enjoyed the the film with the bear cubs (also produced by Disney) which was shown with Bambi as a double feature. It took me decades to find out how the bear cubs film was called (two bears are escaping their mother in Yellowstone Park and in one scene drive a motorboat...the only scene I was able to remember). A few years ago somebody on a German nostalgia forum suggested that it might be "Yellowstone Cubs" (1963). I ordered it and it was indeed the movie I had searched for .

It was probably Snow White or one of the other Disney theatrical re-releases back in the early 1980's. I can't really recall. I do remember watching Ten Commandments and being blown away. Awesome film. I also remember watching plenty of World War 2 films with my Dad. Destination Tokyo and Flying Tigers were favorites. I remember my mom taking me to see Snow White at the movies when I was a kid. She bought me the Golden Book of it on the way to the show. I remember crying my eyes out when Snow White was "dead" in that glass coffin. I didn't want my mom to see me crying so I put the book up to shield my face. Yeah, like that didn't give it away! My first old movies on TV were "A Man called Peter" (Richard Todd) (which still makes me cry today and hasn't lost any of it's charm for me) and a movie on Christopher Columbus with Frederic March. This was around 1962 on German TV.

And by classic, I mean "at least 50 years old." For me, it's The Wizard of Oz. I think we all adored that film as children, and then probably went through a phase where we were very snobby about it during our teens only to discover the film still really holds up as adults. That's the usual story I normally hear from people describing their experiences with the film, anyway, and it's definitely mine. I recently watched it and found it was still worth the time on many levels. It had the right cast, it is brilliant on a technical level, the songs are legendary for a reason, and all around it was just a fun little thing to watch. How about all you? Same. I used to make my classmates reenact it in preschool.

My father first took me to see Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and pointed out the names of all of the actors. He would do the same thing when we watched movies on tv. Gradually I began to put the names to the faces which was the beginning of my love for classic movies.

Mine was Wizard of Oz as well. I came to love that movie so much that a few years ago I went to a Halloween party as Dorothy.
