With Affleck officially bowing out of the position, but still staying on to star in it and write it (I believe), the burden of directing the film falls to another. Honestly, I don't have any immediate choice in mind since I've accepted Affleck himself as the director for months now. I have to say that I am disappointed he won't be directing, since the film would have been right up his alley, and I hope they find a suitable replacement.

Fincher could work, but if he does get it, I hope he doesn't step over the line between simply being "dark" and "FREAKING BLEAK!" while making it. And here's hoping there isn't a bunch of drama behind the scenes.

Especially since I doubt Fincher is in any hurry to repeat the pains of filming "Alien 3." I have rarely pitied a director more than finding out he was frequently bullied by other members of the crew.

Honestly, part of me wishes they would just scrap "The Batman" after this. The truth is from 2013 to 2015 they had enough time to make "Man of Steel 2" and "The Batman" two separate films. "Batman v Superman" is actually a good Superman and a Good Batman film, chopped and spliced together. I think having "Man of Steel 2" about Superman dealing with the ramifications of "Man of Steel"/ "The Death of Superman and "The Batman" focusing on Bruce's past (Robin's Death) the build up to the events of Man of Steel, and do a loose "The Dark Knight Returns" film for the final act from the perspective of "Batman". The two films could have crossed over at the conclusion of "Man of Steel 2" They need to world build with "The Flash" film and "Green Lantern" and "Aquaman" and "Shazam!/Black Adam" so on and so forth. They have made many Batman films in the past. I think the way everything has turned out, Suicide Squad was kind of the DCEU's solo Gotham film. This DCEU Batman should just pop in and out of other DCEU films such as "Gotham City Sirens" and other Suicide Squad spin offs as a minor character. Only have Batman in JL projects a a major role from now on.

I agree. I think the DCEU could have gone something like this:
Man of Steel (2013) The Batman (2015) Starting with an older Bruce since we already know his backstory from a trillion other retellings, this one focusing on how The Joker and Harley killed Robin and their event arrests. Wonder Woman (2015) Man of Steel 2 (2016) Batman and Superman (2017) Notice the middle word is different. Justice League (2018) And then so on. I think going light on the number of films per year would have been good for them early on with the MCU ramping things up for Phase 3. Then when things wind down a bit at Marvel after the defeat of Thanos, that would be the DCEU's time to ramp things up.
I'm conflicted on whether they should scrap "The Batman" or not at this point.

Depends on what you want the new film to be.
Every director will have a brand or style, and something as iconic as Batman is a huuuuge fucking pressure as there is a lot of people to satisfy.
Should it be more character focused? Should it have more action scenes? Should it be bleak?
Affleck was the perfect choice IMO...
I can't think of anyone that would fulfill my wish for a Batman movie.
