I hate the YouTube reviews. Almost every one of them is full of hate, ignorance and close-mindedness. Why does EVERYTHING have to be explained in detail in one movie?? That's insulting to our ability to think and imagine for ourselves. Ambiguity is a good thing in art. Covenant was meant to be cerebral and scary, not action scary like Aliens. Ridley can't do action scary like Cameron... so I'm glad he's not trying.
It was different. And apparently, all people really wanted was the same old formula or nothing at all.
I bought this on DVD and I don't buy movies often. People waiting in line noticed that I was buying it and asked me if I had seen it, because they thought it was a damn good movie. So, YT reviews obviously don't speak for everyone.
As for the argument that the characters are stupid... these characters aren't supposed to be super human. They're normal in extremely terrifying situations. In those situations, when people panic, they don't think very well. They react.
Just look at 9/11. Everyone bought and continue to buy the official story, because of what that event does to their feelings. Any smart, less emotional and weak person can see what really happened.
And don't forget. Audiences can see the aliens for what they are. We subconsciously know far more about these monsters than the characters. But these critics can't appreciate the perspectives of these newbie characters at all. They want the characters to reflect how they feel, what they know. They want a character they can blindly follow.
But I found it fascinating and fun to watch these new characters navigate the dangers on their own. That's all a movie needs to be. Compelling and entertaining.

I like YT reviews. Jahns and Stuckmann are the opposite of hate, ignorant and close minded. I'm not sure about others, Jahns and Stuckmann are really the only two major channels I keep up on.
For the record, I loved Covenant.

So you really thought bringing up 9/11 would make your case stronger after making your own points?

Other than that 9/11 excuse you made, I agree with your points. Covenant was solid and I enjoyed its ambiguity. Finally, someone who understands how horror characters work. Since the characters are scared, they wouldn't be able to think clearly while being tormented.

The problem is that it was neither cerebral nor scary.

Prometheus and Covenant both shortchanged the xenomorph and the terror of the first movie. Seeing the inside of that derelict ship and that insane HR Giger creature design, they both looked like they came from a civilization or culture that is unknowable to humans, bizarre and offensive in every way to our sensibilities.
And then these two dumb movies turn it into some argument against Darwin and tell us those terrifying, unknowable monsters were actually the product of an android with his circuits crossed. They completely ruined to mystery and mystique.

Alien Covenant sucked. It wasn't scary and it wasn't cerebral. In fact it was pretty much trying too hard to be Alien. Ridley Scott butchered the idea of an Alien prequel and is now desperately trying to patch it up.

Ridley Scott butchered the idea of an Alien prequel and is now desperately trying to patch it up. With Covenant, it seemed like he was trying to apologize for something he needn't have to in the first place. I liked Prometheus for what it was. Covenant was more "meh" but I liked the ending. Too bad we probably won't see that movie.

Both of the films were tedious, that was the biggest problem.
