I still try to watch shows live whenever I can but I know many people that strictly record shows and watch them later so they can fast forward through the commercials. I also know people that even do this with cable shows that don't have commercials. Which way do you prefer to watch TV?

I sleep from 6pm-10:30pm(Primetime) so I don't watch live. I also work way too many hours to spend watching commercials, so I love being able to fast forward. It's rare for cable shows not to have commercials. Occasionally TWD won't, but most do. Unless you mean premium channels? What I cannot stand is OnDemand having commercials you cannot ff thru. They are the same commercials over & over & over.

Yes, I was referring to premium channels. Before I got a DVR, which was ridiculously recent, I used to watch OnDemand whenever I missed a show and you are right it's painful when you can't skip commercials.

I recently (i.e., over the summer) watched Alone (History Channel) and Penn and Teller: Fool Us (CW) "live." I also watch Jeopardy that way, of course.
I usually watch if reruns of Seinfeld, Frasier, or Columbo come on, though I don't go actively looking for them. Other than that, I record a lot of what comes on TCM but don't watch it "live" all that often. Then again, I don't watch all that much TV anyway...

The only thing I kind of watch live is sporting events, but even those I pause for 20 minutes or so first so that I can fast-forward commercials. Most stuff I prefer to record, and I'd prefer to record sporting events, too, but they are so many sporting events and they consume so much time that I push myself to watch them live (with the pause-before-starting for commercials) or skip them, otherwise I'd get ridiculously behind.

Ever since the 80's I really have not watched live tv all that much. Whenever things I want to see air, it's generally not a good time for me to watch or I"m working or not home. I've always liked to just have the control of watching things when I feel like watching them and being able to fast forward through the commercials if it has any. Also a lot of times if it's a really good scene or something I want to see again I like to have the option to rewind. Ofcourse now with DVR boxes you can which is good, But I'll always watch everything recorded. I'm a tennis fan so I do the same thing with that. Though it's challenging to avoid spoilers if I wait till the next day to watch it. So I try to watch it the same day at least.

I used to watch lots of shows live and just tough it out during the umpteen ads breaks there’d be (or flick to another channel while they were on). However, in recent years I’ve resorted to recording most shows on TV and then watching the recordings so that I can fast-forward through all the ads. It’s so bad that it almost seems like you get 5 minutes of show and then 5 minutes of ads (that might be a slight exaggeration – though not by much). The only shows I watch live are on a channel here that doesn’t have ad breaks.

Most of the time I record and watch later so I can fast-forward through the commercials. However, I do watch live very-rarely sometimes.

If I'm not doing anything, and there is no hockey or baseball game on, I'll watch the show in real time.
There are some that I can NOT watch in real time. One that immediately comes to mind is "The Wall".

The only show I watch live is Game of Thrones, as it's on a channel with no ad breaks.

Nope. I haven't seen a TV commercial in many years. Seriously. I don't watch live sports either. Some times a friend or aquaintence will say " have you seen that funny commercial blah blah ..." and I'm clueless.

Just Game of Thrones, since spoilers are near impossible to avoid.

Watching a show dead makes it very difficult to follow the plot.....or so I surmise.

I find it difficult to stare at a screen continuously, ad breaks are nice for giving my eyes a rest
