Robert was killed by a boar in self-defense. Robert attacked first and missed his thrust. He had been drinking of his special wine all day, the one he insisted on having at all times. Cersei made sure he never lacked of it, as Robert was known to become violent when sober. He even hit her once.
Lancel did think it had been done with an evil purpose in mind but he was an idiot with one ball and no brains whose mother was a dumb whore with a fat arse.
It is known.

Is that an actual fan theory? As much as I dislike Cersei, I concur there's no connection. Robert was drunk and got himself fucked up because of it. Happens every day in real life to real life husbands with bitchy wives. Why not in the realm of medieval fantasy?

It's not a theory. Who could seriously believe that Cersei, threatened by Ned, relied on a hunting accident as if it were something anyone had control of?

I still think Bloodraven made the boar do it. But relying on a boar in the first place is too stupid, even for Cersei. The George should have reconsidered that.

She had as much to do with it as with the murder of Jon Arryn but viewers were led to believe otherwise. This is a trick which gets repeated all over the story. They'll do it again with Joffrey's murder in Season 4. Cersei would have loved to influence the proceedings but she wasn't able to and Shae was just telling the truth.

She made Lancel give him stronger wine than Robert was used to. Still: he was a drunk and had just drunk more quantaties to the ssame avail. The boar did the rest. I guess Selmy really failed him here.
If he couldn't make him stop drinking, he had to take care that the boar was dead before it posed a threat. Even if it had meant being yelled at or worse.

When the boss wants to do something risky for a hobby, the bodyguard cannot prevent it. His job is to keep foreign, intentional harm away, not to act as a protective mother. If Robert had ridden off a cliff instead of getting drunk before attacking a boar, it wouldn't have been Selmy's fault.

Cercei would look for any opportunity, whether it was at the boar hunt (Is there such a thing as a safe boar hunt even when sober?) or the tournament.
However, since the tournament was over, there were a bunch of ways for Robert to die during that hunt. If that weren't the plan there would have been no reason to have stronger wine in the first place.

Aren't you forgetting something? Cersei told Septor Unella: "I killed my husband...because it felt good to get rid of him."

As his body guard it had been his duty to stop him, even if this has ment his very death. That's the difference between him and Arthur Dayne.
