As Hallowe'en is rapidly approaching, I thought I'd try an experiment about it and see what you all think. Based on all of our comments in naterdawg 's "Halloween movies!" thread, I've put together a poll of movies related to the holiday. Which are your three favorites? N.B.: I'm NOT asking for your favorites of these choices, only for your favorites to watch (hypothetically) on or around Hallowe'en night--to get you "in the mood," as it were. For example, I prefer Sleepy Hollow, as a movie, to the fabulously silly House on Haunted Hill, but the latter seems more specifically Hallowe'en-y to me, if that makes any sense (though the former is remarkably autumnal--grrr, this is a more difficult choice than I thought...).

NalkarjOn the list I like Ichabod and Toad. Have only seen Arsenic and House on Haunted Hill and not big on either one. MAJOR Cary Fan but he over-Cary's On in this one (imo) I do Like THE CORPSE BRIDE and FRANKENWEENIE in the Other category.
Tradition in the childhood BatCave was to watch the Universal Classics for Halloween - Frank, Drac, Wolfie and Mummy.
dawgs post is, as usual, pretty pointless.

BATouttaheckThanks, Bat. I'm a great fan of Ichabod and Mr. Toad as well--still remember the first time I saw it (wow! That Horseman--in a Disney movie!). If I may make a suggestion, you may like Sleepy Hollow and Ghostwatch (my other two choices for this poll, for the moment). The latter achieves what I think The Haunting tried and--though this is an idiosyncratic opinion--failed to achieve: the terror of suggestion and, more than that, the terror that anything can happen even in the most normal situations ( à la Hitchcock, in a way). I think it's my favorite ghost/haunting movie of them all, to be honest.

NalkarjIs Ghostwatch worth investing $$$ in? Say as much as $1.67 ? Is this the correct Ghostwatch to watch for ? I have a nephew who is a "paranormal investigator". The only family car they have is a hearse. I have not seen him since he was little kid so have no idea what he is like now.

You know what, I'd even say--yes, I know I may be publicly crucified for this--that you could invest as much as two whole dollars in it. "Merciful heaven, man, do you know what you're saying?" Seriously, I think it's very eerie, very effective, smartly plotted and convincingly acted. (That last detail is crucial with regard to this set-up.) I... Um, OK. Best of luck to your paranormal investigator nephew, but--uh--a hearse? I mean, heck, I'd be willing to spend a night or two in a supposedly haunted house, but that's mostly because I (a) like that stuff a lot and (2) don't believe in it, for the most part. But to each his own, I suppose...

It was an extremely tough call with this Salzmank only because there were a lot of great choices and favorites of mine here as well . However the 3 I voted for was - The Haunting (1963) The Legend of Hell House (1973) & The Haunting (1999) As for my other favorites of mine from this list - House on Haunted Hill (1959) - a definite fan of Vincent Price & William Castle films Halloween (1978) - also a fan of John Carpenter films too Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) - I haven't seen this one in many years but do remember it being a real good one Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) - another JC Fave Lady in White (1988) - also liked young actor Lukas Haas in this one and his other film Witness (1985) Sleepy Hollow (1999) - actress Christina Ricci was excellent in this one too Trick 'r Treat (2007) - anthologies are also favorites of mine too this film reminds me of Creepshow (1982) & Creepshow 2 (1987) Surprisingly these films I have not seen but wish to one fine day via TCM perhaps . Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) Ghostwatch (1992) IMPO - I also have many other films too so for another excellent example set that would really be perfectly appropriate for the season are these 2 classic films - Burnt Offerings (1976) The Hearse (1980) Thanks so much Salzmank for your subject post .

Nalkarj Not "films" BUT fun for the Holiday are the Simpson's TREEHOUSE OF TERROR episodes and the Halloween episodes on Roseanne.

The only movie on that list that I watch is "Ichabod and Mr. Toad." I'm not really a big fan of Halloween, to be honest.

I am not into those movies but I have seen arcenic and old lace.
my faves are more light hearted than severe. ghostbusters, ghostbusters2, casper, joy ride, carrie [all versions], Christine, the shining, Emily Rose, Amityville, and who can forget ELVIRA??? she is the most fun!
and this one is not light hearted but it was just so shocking... ju on. scary as shit.

I quite agree that Ichabod and Mr. Toad is great; as far as movies on this list go, if you enjoy that, you may enjoy Sleepy Hollow (if you haven't seen it already). It is a wildly unfaithful adaptation of Irving's tale, but it's good fun (in my opinion) and offers several callbacks to Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

The holiday, though I suppose that sums up my opinion of the movie as well. I've seen the Burton Sleepy Hollow, and it didn't really impress me much to be honest.

filmfan95Any specific reason that you don't like Hallowe'en that you'd like to share? Commercialization, perhaps, or what? (If not, that's fine too.)
