By artists do you mean just painters? Nope, other disciplines are welcome like sculptors or craftsmen. Though for the sake of keeping things straight, let's leave musicians, writers, and filmmakers for a different thread.

If Pablo Picasso's art did not hang over the bar of generations of millionaires whose interest it has always be in to keep his legend at the top of Modern Art and prices from falling, the place for alot of his later art would be far more diminished.

I don't agree Picasso could be called overrated. He was very prolific, and at the forefront of many movement. You might say Cubism was a technic, but he was also a great draughtsmen. Often you'll see bold hands and feet in his paintings, which many artists shy from. (sometimes just a smear!) He's also done some of the most famous anti-war paintings of all time "Guernica" and "Massacre in Korea" He's a rare 'famous in his own life time', and deserved it.

Well i am not calling him overrated. I am calling him awful. Of course that may be because i don`t like the style of his paintings.

No, there is support for feologild's argument in the fact that the public is at such odds with Picasso, can you think of another artist who evokes such a love/hate relationship. I am more or less ambiguous about Picasso, though I do like certain aspects of his work they do not provoke much from me, it is mostly on an intellectual level, being fully aware that Picasso explored many phases in his style over the years.

I personally love Jackson Pollack and you would have to see his work in person to really grasp the dimensions of some of them. I can understand why people may only see paint splatters but Modern Art is akin to Graphic Art and if you view them this way then they might resonate better.
There is a certain genius in those swirling and weaving patterns.

Yoko Ono's entire musical catalogue could be used on terrorists instead of waterboarding.

Yoko Ono's entire musical catalogue could be used on terrorists instead of waterboarding. Have you ever seen Yoko Ono's visual art, airborne? Some is quite thought provoking. I remember one work with a long white table white chairs on either side all having a chess game. Every chess game had all white men. I thought it was quite moving. There was also a maze made out of plexiglass and the goal was to get to a toilet.

I don't think he's awful at all, but I do think Mark Rothko is a bit overrated.

Picasso is arguably the greatest artist of the 20th century. He had it all: amazing technical skill, creativity, depth, influence, verve, and productivity. Not the least bit overrated.
Cy Twombly is truly an overrated artist, and had he not hooked up with Tatiana Franchetti, he'd be completely forgotten.
