This is a great Star Trek spoof. Seth McFarlane has left his politics out and has actually managed to somehow make a good spoof of Star Trek. Too bad this will most likely get cancelled because people would rather watch crap or something like Star Trek:Discovery which looks pretty awful than actually watch something original that takes inspiration from Star Trek than actually being a cash grab of a old tv show. 😡

I agree that the premier was quite good. It was an action/comedy wrapped in a Star Trek homage. I'm hoping that it is successful.

Well I'm not watching Discovery because because I am not going to pay to join the CBS streaming site.

I really enjoyed it. I like how it has 'less than exemplary' record people on a starship being allowed to show their stuff and earn their stripes. I love the ex being his Number one {love ya, Picard!}.
I like how this quietly made fun of the star trek by the bookness that we know st to be, but it was also respectful.

Family Guy and American Dad are two of my favorite TV series of all time. I was excited when I heard he was going to be in an live action series, which he would also be writing and producing. However, I'm not really a Star Trek fan. I did tune into the pilot, and overall I enjoyed it. However, I'm a little worried about it's long term potential. I know the set up for Star Trek was basically they go to like different planets every week and help those being out. If The Orville follows that format I think I may get a little bored of that. When it comes to hour long series I much prefer them to be serialized. I tend to lose interest in episodic dramas or dramedies. But like I said I enjoyed the pilot, so I will stick with it for now. In terms of how well it rates it'll be interesting to see.

Well I'm not watching Discovery because because I am not going to pay to join the CBS streaming site. I do think CBS is asking a bit much from people to pay for All Access. It's one thing for Netflix or Amazon to do that. They have a variety of TV series and movies to offer. However, what CBS offers is pretty limited. It doesn't seem quite worth it for one to two series. I had that problem last fall when they did Big Brother: Over The Top. I wanted to watch it, but I didn't want to pay the money just to watch one show.

Coolj... Can't you come to a conclusion yourself? Do you have to rely on the opinions of strangers in order to form your own?

It would have been better as a half hour comedy instead of the combination of painfully earnest and fratbro humor. I don't see it lasting too long.

I liked it overall though I really only laughed at two of the jokes. The show can't seem to decide if it wants to be serious or a comedy. It has potential and I will definitely give it a shot.

The only reason I can't see this lasting long is because like I said people would rather watch a cash grab of Star Trek than a show that takes inspiration from the original show. Why are people even excited for Discovery it looks awful!!!

I was hooked by the commercials and the actual show delivered!
This is actually far better than the last four Star Trek TV shows (and after a couple of weeks, the last five Star Trek TV shows).
This is how science-fiction shows, especially a Star Trek or Star Trek-type show, should look and feel.
The visual effects are way better and cleaner and crisper than the last four (and soon-to-be-five) Star Trek TV shows, and even the 2009-present Star Trek movies.
It has the look of The Next Generation and the humor and accessibility of The Original Series.
Already, one of my favorite parts of the new show and what I'm most looking forward to is the various names they come up with for characters, themes, and concepts that are similar to Star Trek (Planetary Union Central, the half-Vulcan/half-Klingon Selayan -- haha, Mount Selaya -- who looks like, has a name similiar to, and has the same job as B'Elanna Torres).
By the way, the one thing they didn't seem to cop off of Star Trek was the whole concept of the transporter and beaming.
Also, is the shape and design of the Orville supposed to be a double entendre? Is the name of the Orville supposed to be a Seth McFarlane in-joke?
My only criticism of the show so far is that the more crass and vulgar humor, while a Seth McFarlane trademark, is a little off-putting in this context.
Don't get me wrong -- the rest of the humor, like the mellow, easy-going ogre in the "holodeck" (what will they call this -- the Sim Room or Sim Deck or Game Room or Play Room?), is spot on. Even the blue alien liquid allegory was hilarious. The drawing penises stuff wasn't.
But otherwise, I'm totally onboard.
Also, is that Brent Spiner as the voice of the robot? It sure sounds an awful lot like him. If it isn't him, that's a damn good impression. Come to think of it, that could be Seth. Given his voice talents, he might be pulling James Doohan double duty.

I didn't think the premiere episode was particularly good. It's not even a proper parody of Star Trek, it's more like actual Star Trek (down to the long, dull docking scenes) with hit-and-miss comedy added, and a maudlin love story between the only two characters with any depth on top of that. Not nearly as edgy as I would have hoped. I liked the bit where they were needling the scientist about the "anti-banana" ray, but few bits made me laugh out loud. Hope it improves.

Unfortunately, it was terrible.
Not funny at all.
Very disappointing.
