The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I didnt think it was that bad--been meaning to revisit it, but the director appears to have been banished to minor crew work, probably because he caused Sean Connery to give up acting.
Talk about an unwanted distinction!
"I caused Sean Connery to give up acting!"

It was a troubled production regardless of who directed it. Perhaps he can have a comeback.

Even the great man himself, Alfred Hitchcock, finished with Family Plot, which wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good either. It's kinda fun as a time-waster, but a time-waster shouldn't really have been Hitch's last film. It would've been more satisfying if he'd ended with Frenzy, a great film that brought his career full-circle.

His last credit is listed as "creature sculptor" for Harbinger Down. Sounds like he got blacklisted with a capital B. Bob Gale also got banished to the wilderness after he got Spielberg involved in the Crispin Glover lawsuit. There was a guy who took Spielberg to court over Poltergeist--forgot his name--his mother was a famous actress, was an interesting case because he had Ray Bradbury as a ghost expert on his side while Spielberg had Richard Matheson on his. It got settled but as a consequence the guy never worked in Hollywood again.

Sam Peckinpah. He slumped badly in the final years; drugs and booze.

Sam Peckinpah. He slumped badly in the final years; drugs and booze. Well, Bloody Sam was pretty much always an alcoholic. However things really got worse during the shooting of The Getaway and he obviously never should have touched cocaine. I do have a soft spot for Convoy since it's quite fun to watch and has Peckinpah's usual themes all over it. Not really defending the film though, it's obviously not very good in any traditional sense. Would love to see Sam's 3 hour director's cut anyway. The Osterman Weekend is very interesting and ambitious, but it was also a troubled production and Sam got kicked out during post-production, which is very sad. What a way to finish a career - former master director unceremoniously getting kicked out of his final project. I like the finished film to a degree though and would have a disagree about it being his worst. The Killer Elite is easily his least inspired work.

From what I've understood the studio messed this up all by themselves and the way it was promoted was quite stupid too. Norrington was probably just the fall guy. Someone had to be since production studios hardly ever blame themselves. Anyway the movie wasn't even that bad. As a comic book adaption it sucked but not on its own.

A remake would be cool but I think the closest we'll get was with 'Penny Dreadful'.

Someone had to be since production studios hardly ever blame themselves. Anyway the movie wasn't even that bad. As a comic book adaption it sucked but not on its own. At the time I remember hearing reports that Connery got into fights with Norrington and he later said he was tired of working on movies where people didnt know what they were doing-or something to that effect. Though Michael Caine said SC gave up acting because he didnt want to do supporting roles. I think overall League was ok as a movie (though I'd like to see the version with the character who was erased from the story). It's the type of story that would have been better served in a pre-digital era--like the late 70s. Some of the digital effects and MTV editing is very off putting. But I never found it the trainwreck it was described as. The Dorian Gray Mina Harker fight was amusing. I prefer the weaponizing their powers plot to the comics plot, but it could have used Fu Manchu at least in cameo. I wouldnt mind getting one of those portraits of the previous Leagues--the one with the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh...

"The Ward", John Carpenter. It just feels so bland and generic. If Carpenter actually did direct this, his direction was very uninspired. It feels like it could have been made by anybody.
And I say this as a Carpenter fan.
