Was it shoving his kids down our throats for years? Even Black people avoid his movies now.

First off, I don't happen to believe that movie stars are a big attraction anymore. They help the box office a bit, but if the movie is terrible or generally uninteresting, people won't see it. Maybe they will catch it when it comes to Netflix or another streaming site.
Will Smith isn't box office poison, his roles he's choosing are poor. However, the worst script he's had was Suicide Squad, but the marketing was fantastic. It made bank. Film was trash.
Collateral Beauty = Oscar Fail Film = It actually made money when WW is considered Suicide Squad=DC Movie=Money Concussion = Oscar Mediocre Film = Lost a little money (low budget) Focus = Mixed Review R film = Barely made money Winter's Tale = An awful film that he was supporting = big loss of money After Earth = awful film featuring nepotism = didn't lose as much money as people think MIB 3 = big production third film that was panned = Money (domestically mediocre, world wide success) Seven Pounds = Never seen it = actually made a little money Hancock = Big budget = Money and a lot of it
If I go further back, it's all money.
1 He lost money in Winter's Tale. He was not featured and no one could save that movie, look at the cast. That film's problems go beyond the actors. 2 He lost a little bit of money in a Oscar Bait film. In my opinion, not his fault. 3 He lost a little bit of money in After Earth. This was one of his poorest choices of the decade.
So if you want to argue that he's not as much of a draw as he used to be, you can argue that. He isn't poison.

He's hardly box office poison. After Earth is his only major high profile flop and even Collateral Beauty was an ensemble film;once both got panned people avoided it like the plague. And I think you're forgetting Suicide Squad too, a film where he's far and away the most recognizable cast member and the main character.

Except for Suicide Squad, his movies have been awful starting with After Earth--however his career still looks good compared to Jamie Foxx lol

I wouldn't call him box office poison. However, at this current time I think he is really struggling getting original films off the ground. He is doing better with adaptations like Suicide Squad or sequels. I think the best thing he could do right now is focus on the sequels to Suicide Squad and Bad Boys. I also think he should reunite with Tommy Lee Jones for MIB 4.

I think the fact that Suicide Squad out grossed Independence Day 2 comfortably points out Will Smith is still very much a top star.
But as others have said, at the moment it's not so much about being a star, it's more about the brand/franchise
