Death Wish 2 is quite good but Death Wish 3 went way over the top imo.

Death Wish 2 is quite good but Death Wish 3 went way over the top imo. There is nothing quite like DEATH WISH 3-85'. It was a complete, violent, cartoonish and even colorful urban assault movie, that I don't think any other over-the-top action\vigilante movie has been able to emulate in all it's glorious absurdity. Perhaps Stallone's COBRA-86', made a somewhat similar and stylish entry the following year.
DW3, went down a bizarre and even surreal path, and made it an original and even unforgettable entry into the Death Wish saga. It didn't have the realism, grit or style of the first, or the straightforward, no-nonsense and angry vengeful tension of the second; but it sure is enjoyable and blackly funny. It parodied it's own formula by putting all the elements that made the first 2 work into a blender, added a massive dose of exploitation and tongue in cheek, and wizzed it all up on high speed. Michael Winner, came out with a winner as far as I'm concerned.
Personally I only liked the first film.

I always thought the cartoonish "The Exterminator II" tried to replicate the tone/and style of "Death Wish 3". Is it on the same level... no way, but it does have its moments led by an outrageously campy Mario Van Peebles "I AM the streets"! bad guy turn.

Exterminator II was released a year before Death Wish 3. I'd say then, that DW3 may have taken something that didn't quite work in E2 and improved upon it. I prefer E2 to the first. Yeah, you're right! I was under the impression it came out mid to late 80s. Must be thinking of something else? I definitely agree, I get more out of "Exterminator II" than the original. It's been quite sometime since I've watched the first film, but I remember being fairly underwhelmed and disinterested in the romance subplot between the investigating detective and nurse. On the other hand the violence was typically mean-spirited and locations downright gritty.

I find the daughter stuff in the uncut DW 2 really disturbing. She is already badly fucked up from the first movie--having it happen a second time, and Bronson doesn't get emotional about it. His sermonizing about Jesus was a good touch though.
Fun DW 2 trivia:
According to Michael Winner's biography, Charles Bronson's alcoholic brother often visited the set to borrow money. Bronson was careful not to give him too much in case someone might kill him for it. He was later found dead in a cheap hotel room having been stabbed in the buttocks.

Did he bleed to death?

Was that the fatal wound? Did he bleed to death? I have no idea. Read it on IMDB. Was news to me. Didnt know he had a brother. I knew he was left a ton of money by a librarian and he donated it in her name.

I liked Death Wish II better--III was nuts There is certainly a sharp contrast between the two; Death Wish II was serious, grim, and unpleasant, whereas Death Wish III was a campy comic book movie.

They killed The Giggler, man. They had no business doing that.
