Discovery will be shown on Netflix UK on Monday 25th September. Not sure if that also applies to the US but I'm guessing so.
I will return to this thread to discuss the show once I watch it. Please join me.

First episode (or first two episodes, depending on how you look at it) aired tonight in Canada on a specialty Sci-fi cable channel (no need to pay for streaming). I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. I will certainly keep watching it.

'The Orville' is a decent show (even good), but nothing special. However, it's way superior to 'Discovery'...which completely SUCKS. So therefore, I'll take 'The Orville' over this anytime.

About to check out the second episode, but if it's as bad as the premiere, I will stop watching.

I watched the first five minutes of episode one. It sucked. The acting was horribly wooden, the dialogue was just really, really bad, everything that happened was stupid and made no sense.
It looks expensive, yet at the same time it looks really stupid and wrong.
I don't know how they could have screwed this up so badly when getting it right is so easy.
Cancel this show and put the money into The Orville!

It's sad. I was hoping Trek could make a comeback... What they should have done was just hire Mcfarlane from the get-go. He's a huge fan, he would have done the show properly, and probably added a human element we hadn't seen in previous Trek series.

The first episode was not great. They had almost zero respect for Star Trek canon. I have no intention of ever paying to watch this or any other CBS show. If they put the rest of the series on broadcast or cable TV, I will consider watching it.

BTW, if this show is going to be about a war with the Klingons and not about exploration, why is it called "Discovery"?

I actually liked it.
It started terribly, with clunky dialogue and weirdly bad acting (given the cast) and it took a while to get going but it got a lot better and started to draw me in. I loved the new Klingons (balls and teeth restored) and thought it made perfect sense to recast them as Muslim zealots (given their origins as Russians) intent on portraying the Federation as deceitful conquerors masquerading as a freedom loving, democratic race of peaceful bureaucrats.
I loved all that. Using current events to tell futuristic stories is always a good idea.
Loved Saru. Instantly likeable and three dimensional.

It looks expensive, yet at the same time it looks really stupid and wrong. I don't know how they could have screwed this up so badly when getting it right is so easy. So in other words, Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman must be taking advice from Stephen Moffat on how to RUIN an iconic 50+ year old television science fiction franchise, and alienate your fan base in droves. KURTZMAN: Okay, we're putting Star Trek back on the small screen in the PRIME timeline. That's what the fans want! But man, how can I make this suck WORSE than the Abrams movies anyway? MOFFAT: Hmmm. Alright. Create random characters that are only there to appease SJWs, run an entire marketing campaign screaming about how 'diverse' the show is now, even if its LESS diverse than before, and accuse anyone who doesn't like your show of being a racist, sexist, homophobic bigot. Spend 90% of the time yapping about how awesome it is because some character is gay. KURTZMAN: Check. MOFFAT: Crap all over past continuity and introduce random new stuff that makes no sense whatsoever in the show's canon, but insist you're "strictly following canon" KURTZMAN: Check. MOFFAT: Create some big season long arc nobody wants or asked for, and in the first episode, make sure it drench the entire episode in it even though there's no payoff whatsoever. KURTZMAN: Check. MOFFAT: Write idiotic stilted dialogue with "clever" quips that sound absolutely nothing like anything a person would say in real life. KURTZMAN: Check. MOFFAT: 'Re-imagine' an iconic villain with some ridiculous ugly look that results in non-stop scorn on social media... KURTZMAN: Damn, you're GOOD at sabotaging once awesome sci-fi shows!!! MOFFAT: I try.

Thought there was too much focus on Captain Georgiou & Burnham in that aside from LT Saru the rest of the crew were nobodies. The Klingon dialog scenes were a bit long & there was too much reading subtitles. Overall I had a OK reaction to the 2 eps, and it did enough to make me want to watch more.

Is it so much to ask to just keep the camera level?
