There have been similar threads but none exclusively for this "odd duck" of the Bond franchise. Does anyone have very strong opinions toward it, whether positively or negatively? I felt it was middling overall, but I enjoyed seeing Connery play Bond again. By the by, I've posted a thread about Fleming's original James Bond books in the "Books" category, in case anyone here is interested.

The two BEST parts are the fight scene between Bond and the guy from Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)...and the Domination game featuring the vocal stylistics of the EMS Vocoder-System 3000.

for me... it's a average/forgettable movie in general. with that said, it's not bad, just has no re-watch value and like i always say that's what makes or breaks a movie in the long term.
5/10 (Thumbs Down)
p.s. for the record... there is 14 out of the 25 Bond movies i like and Never Say Never is amongst the Thumbs Down group.

A useless piece of junk, and not one I even consider a Bond movie. Pointless remake of Thunderball, which was one of the most boring entries in the "legitimate" franchise to begin with. Audiences in 1983 largely agreed, as Octopussy out-grossed this travesty.

Here are my thoughts on this movie.
It isn't canon in the MGM/Broccoli timeline. So if you are a traditionalist Bond fan, and you follow the series with the traditional intro, tropes, etc... I understand your sentiment to this entry. It doesn't fit.
However, my dad is a Sean Connery fan. He doesn't even like Roger Moore's take on the character.
My dad says it's Connery's farewell to the character, and he deserved to have that chance to say 'goodbye' and send him off. My dad ONLY owns the Connery Bonds on DVD. He considers this Connery canon and his finale as Bond.
So I guess it depends on what you consider canon?

Its a decent film, but I think they should have followed Connery's advice and let it be a film that really tackles an older Bond. Early on, they touch on the idea of Bond losing his edge due to old age, but after the first act, that aspect of the film is lost. They shouldn't have dropped it, but rather continued to have Bond struggle with taking on younger, stronger opponents in their prime.

I find it curious this film featured a black Felix Leiter decades before the official films introduced a black Felix

Klaus Maria Brandauer's portrayal of Maximillian Largo was the only really interesting thing in this hopelessly forgettable rehash of Thunderball, which wasn't even a good movie or even a good script to begin with. I liked it that Largo was far more human than most Bond villains, a fragile and tragic figure even. However Bond was too much a smug superhero, despite Connery now being much older. I'd rate it 5 or 6 out of 10, making it slightly better than Thunderball, but that's not saying much.

I also don't think much of Thunderball. It has a very disjointed story. Bond gets a clue so he goes to a place and is attacked. After that he goes to another place and gets attacked. And on and on. Nothing comes together until the very end and the lead-up to the underwater battle. The silliest diversion is when he is attacked on the docks by a gang but is saved by Fiona. She takes him back to her place where they spend the night making the sign of the triple-fluted stegosaurus. The next morning she leaves with Bond in a small plane. Trapping him in his seat, she bails out so the plane will crash, killing him. (Non-spoiler: he escapes.) Question: why didn't she just let the gang on the dock kill him? Why didn't she kill him any time during the night like when he was asleep? Why waste a valuable airplane? There are no answers to these questions.

I really like the title track. Outside that this film is just okay. I guess the one good thing that came out of it was that it revitalized Connery's career.

It had one of the more entertaining villainesses.

The only character who made this film tolerable. Once she dies, i lose interest. Barbara Carrera was awesome as Blush! She is so OTT! Love the part in the casino, where Largo has a go at her for failing to kill Bond and she dances down the stairs!

I seem to recall it being very bad, and so was Connery's syrup.
