Mine is a toss up between The Kissing Bandit, Finnian's Rainbow, and Evita (yes Evita! Hated it!!)

I can't remember the title of it, or the plot of it (all I remember is someone at some point held a newspaper with a WW2-related headline on it featuring a certain offensive 3-letter word of the period), but the worst I've seen was a really shallow 20th Century Fox musical from the 1940s. Carmen Miranda appeared in it, and though she was given a bigger role than usual, that doesn't mean it was a better showcase for her talents. I realise musicals are meant to be light entertainment, but even so, there has to be at least a small amount of substance in it. This film had about as much substance as a bubble. The fact I've forgotten nearly everything about it despite watching it only a few years ago should tell you something.

Can't find a reference to the movie you mean. Carmen Miranda never did anything for me. Nor did many of the musicals made in that period (even though I love the big band swing era). One exception made in that period would be Yankee Doodle Dandy.

I have to go with White Christmas, which devolved into a collection of cringe-worthy skits, much like the last half of Thousands Cheer.

Finnian's Rainbow? Seriously? While I'd admit it has its problems, the score is evergreen, the acting is (mostly) pretty good, as is the singing. And it's Coppola's only musical! You weren't expecting Apocalypse Now, I hope.

Not sure if this counts as a musical but Rocky Horror Picture Show, what a mess.
Also West Side Story, tried watching it, when the started to have a knife fight with jazz hands I was out.

For my money it is The Apple www.imdb.com/title/tt0080380/combined , a tasteless affair produced by a tasteless producer (Menahem Golan). For all the wrong reasons it is irresistible and I urge every fan of the bad to seek it out.

I imagine I'll Do Anything would have been one of the worst musicals if they put the songs back in.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
But it should be said that i have not really seen that many musicals. I am sure there are musicals that is worse than Sweeney Todd. But out of the once i have seen that is the worst.

What's messy about my favorite musical? It's very much a straightforward story and the songs all blend together excellently.

Any character in particular? Susan Sarandon looked absolutely stunning. Mind elaborating here? What do you mean by 'messy'? When I think messy I'm thinking of the very end of the story when the house takes off into outer space, leading to the "Super Heroes" sequence.

I can't even recall the Super heores sequence, I really struggled through it when I watched it a long time ago. I just remembered thinking that given all of the hype about this play/movie that it was really disappointing. As a kid I loved the song though and I have an original soundtrack LP that is done in blood red vinyl.
