I personally love 70s & 80s synth score. For example, John Carpenter always has awesome music in his movies.
So here are some of my favorites scores, what about yours?
Phantasm
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Prince of Darkness
Day of the Dead (1985)
And the modern scores inspired by the classics:
It Follows
Starry Eyes - sorry for the awful quality, I couldn't find anything better.

Great thread, and surely one that is not going to be easy, as there are so many good scores/themes to choose from, but those that I can for the moment remember are: Brain Damage (1988) - End Theme
One of my favorite horror themes from the 80s and a rather sad one too. Maniac (1980) - Inner Voices by Jay ChattawayVery effective and chilling sounds, not that far off what Suicide or Throbbing Gristle did back in the late 70s. Near Dark - Mae's Theme by Tangerine Dream (1987)You can never go wrong with an 80s movie scored by the legendary Tangerine Dream. Those german synth wizards did really put out some of the best film scores at that time, and the dreamlike and haunting sounds of Mae's Theme fits so well along with the films well paced and beautiful scenery. I actually have a bit of trouble coming up with other favorites, and was not that easy as it seems I guess, but I will come back, that I can promise.

I'm partial to James Bernard's scores for the early Hammer Films horrors. I also like Jerry Goldsmith's score for the original Omen.

The score to Psycho is the best ever score for a horror film. Goldsmith's score to The Omen is also pretty good, as is William's score to Jaws.
When I speak of scores, I am referring to the way the music works with the film in all capacities, not just how attractive or appealing the theme is. For instance, while I love the shower scene music in Psycho, I personally think the scene is more visceral without it, and I also don't give a crap about the music acting as the shark in Jaws. The best music in those films are the lesser-known cues. Williams even wrote a fugato for Jaws. That's pretty impressive.
If I limit myself to just themes or memorable cues, I would saw that The Amityville Horror has some nice music, as does Hellraiser. And you know, Drive-In Massacre has a very memorable, if bad, score. I think it was written for a small keyboard, a picket fence (with stick), and a peg leg.

Awesome thread! I was expecting the soundtrack from your namesake. That's one of my favs. So anyway I liked this particular one from Christine (I think the film was better than the book by making the car her own thing rather than being posessed.) Good pick, and certainly one those film scores that almost single handedly lifts the movie from maybe a good 6/10 and up to a solid 7,5/10. My favorite version of the Christine theme or is it Moochie's death? anyway some say it is an updated version made by a german John Carpenter cover band, called The Splash, while other videos of the same version says it is John Carpenter's work, only slightly different than the one used in the movie. Anyway, I love it, and specially the video it comes along with.

Neither had I, but it seems like they did provide the more upbeat version and have also released an tribute album based on most of Carpenter's famous themes, called The Splash Band - The Music of John Carpenter, which might be worthy a check for fans of the horror legend. From the look of the reviews, it either love it or hate it, but I gotta say I really am impressed with some of their re-work. Of course maybe not every one is a hit, but the Christine theme is so good, that it had me fooled for several years, much thanks to Napster, who always seemed to putting it as an original John Carpenter piece, of course a very "limited" one.

The score to Psycho is the best ever score for a horror film. Goldsmith's score to The Omen is also pretty good, as is William's score to Jaws. I have always enjoyed Goldsmith's sad and beautiful little theme for Psycho II (1983) one of my favorite "slasher" 80s films. Somehow the original theme by Goldsmith is not available, strange, it used to be, but still there are some really well done covers out there, such as this one: No wait, sorry, it turns out someone posted it Starts from around 01:14 and it breaks my heart everytime. Tragically underrated film, and easily among the best made sequels ever. The longer theme versions picks up again around 04:18 and up till the end.

Oh, typical, just right before I have to go to sleep, I remember them all. Anyway, here's another killer proving why prog rock and giallo was a match made in heaven, screw those snobby critics, Keith Emerson (RIP) you always rocked!

Yeah, I know that theme well. I have the soundtrack. I like it overall, but I haven't studied it, so I can't speak to its relationship to the film.
By the way, the videos on this thread are resulting in major loading problems. If possible, maybe links would be better in the future than embedded video.

Awesome thread! I was expecting the soundtrack from your namesake. That's one of my favs. I thought that it's too obvious. And I didn't want to list too much scores in the first post. :> ** This lullaby makes me think about Rosemary's Baby lullaby: The Perfume of the Lady in Black And two songs made for horror movies: The House on The Edge of the Park Soundtrack - Sweetly Sleepstalker - little known movie, but this song is incredible.

Awesome thread! I was expecting the soundtrack from your namesake. That's one of my favs. The House on The Edge of the Park Soundtrack - Sweetly This song gives me the creeps. The fact that it's so "angelic-sounding" and innocent makes it all the more eerie, and it fits perfectly in the movie.
