This thread is for questions and discussions regarding the OCTOBER HORROR CHALLENGE. Anything related to the challenge. The goal of this challenge is to watch 31 horror movies within the month and 16 of them must be first-time viewings. However you can watch more if you want. Rules: • I was going to use “Movies must be horror, as listed on IMDb”. However since “JAWS” isn’t considered so by IMDb. If you think its horror, then use your best judgment. Horror can be subjective. If still unsure, ask the question on this thread.
• Runtime must be at least 50 minutes, or near it. Therefore no short films, unless they are part of a collection/or feature length film
• horror TV series do not count, but “Masters of Horror” episodes will be the exception.
• documentaries do not count.
• You can only count a movie once. Unless IMDb provides separate pages for different cuts. E.g. “Lisa and the Devil” & “The House of Exorcism”.
• And lastly have fun!
This will kick off at 12am 1st October and finish at 6am November 1st. To post your progress go to; imdb2.freeforums.net/thread/59918/october-horror-challenge-progress-thread

Basically what I do is mainly see films that are new to me. I have a bin full of DVDs, VHS and Blu Rays that I havent seen yet. I do see some horror films I have seen before but only like 3 or 4.
I do short films as well but I put that as a separate list.
The odd thing is I usually get stuck with a bunch of bad ones during this time. I dont know why. Hopefully this year will be better.

Yeah, me too. I have a lot of catching up when it comes to watching the all time classic monster and horror movies of the 30s, 40s and 50s, so I am really looking forward to get into action and hopefully have a great time doing so. But of course, I guess watching 31 perfect 10/10s in a month, is very unrealistic (for me), but it is a challenge, and I do enjoy to try and move out of my "comfort" zone once in a while, so I might just save the more familiar faces along with my all time favorite horror decade (the 80s) untill the end of the month. By the way, you have done a truly great job on the set up of these two threads about the October Horror Challenge, lostinlimbo.

Likewise, most of my viewings will be first-time viewings of pyshical copies I picked over the last few years. It helps me cut through the back log. Are those 3 or 4 repeat viewings regular viewings every October? That's cool about short films. Yeah I know what you mean about having a bad/or ordinary trot during the challenge. Had a couple of those in recent times. Especially when you're focusing on first time viewings. Still I always seem to find a few good surprises.

I just followed the evolving blueprint (with some minor changes over the years) that was created some 13 years ago (by if I remember correctly Bensonmum2) on IMDb. Been participating in it since day dot, so it's etched in my mind. Great to see you join in.

Like many of us on the horror board, I've (repeatedly) seen all the old-school horror classics. Thankfully Netflix has tons and tons of the newer horror stuff, so I'll be taking full advantage of that for my first-time viewings.

Its a shame the dutch Netflix has such a terrible and small horror section.

I assume that made-for-TV horror movies are acceptable?

I assume that made-for-TV horror movies are acceptable? TV movies are fine. Do you have some on mind? I know YouTube seems to have a whole variety of made-for-TV horror films uploaded on their site.

I was thinking of the standard classics such as Trilogy Of Terror, Night Stalker/Night Strangler, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, etc. Devil Dog; Hound Of Hell is a personal favorite of mine. And then there are the Stephen King miniseries such as Salem't Lot, the original IT, and The Langoliers. Yes, TV horror movies are plentiful on YouTube. Lots to choose from.

I know somebody traditionally compiles the results and posts a thread listing them some time in November. Are you taking care of that, lost in limbo, or would you like me to help out?

Anybody know if TCM would cut Beetlejuice if its shown at 7.15pm? I hate recording a movie and then half way through realising its cut.
........ Gonna watch this at work instead, IMDb has it down as a 15's, theres no way TCM are gonna show a 15's at 7.15pm. I remember watching The Goonies years ago on TCM and the hanging scene at the beginning was cut

I joined this site the moment I saw this thread. I'm a former IMDb poster (posted under the name Unwantedaddress) and participated in this challenge for the last 5 or 6 years, except sadly, for last year when I was out of the country for the month of October. I missed the last year of the old forums, and am delighted to see the tradition staying here. I look forward to participating with you all.

Doubt I'll get that many movies watched next month, but will definitely aim to watch a fair few. Will also be watching numerous episodes of Tales From the Darkside, though I know they don't technically count for the purposes of the Challenge.

Will also be watching numerous episodes of Tales From the Darkside, though I know they don't technically count for the purposes of the Challenge. There's no issues with that. List them on your list, and highlight those episodes so they stand out. Or use a second list for those entries. Just don't add them to your total viewings tally. While it's a challenge, in the end it's all about how you want to celebrate horror leading up to Halloween. I myself will probably be watching some X-Files episodes since I'm halfway through re-watching the series right now. So it's interesting just to see what everyone is watching during the month, possibly picking up recommendations and finding some common ground. If you complete or not, it's just great to see horror fans participating in any shape.

Thanks for the offer of assistance heysweden and yeah, I'll be providing the results in November . I might be fine, as it all depends on the numbers that get involved. But if I do find myself in over my head, I'll shoot you off a message. But thanks again for the offer.

I got Hooper's "Salem's Lot" lined up this year. It's a repeat, but I'm looking forward to watching it again. Might just dig out the book too. I picked it up awhile ago but never got around to reading it. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" was one of my favourites from a previous challenge. A nicely creepy film.

The novel version of Salem's Lot is easily one of Stephen King's finest works. I would highly recommend you check it out ASAP.
