VitsFollowing the Avengers theme--John Steed? But I, like many posters here, fail to see how Bond, particularly Connery's and Dalton's Bond, doesn't fit your criteria.

Well...long before "Bond. James Bond", there was Simon Templar, aka The Saint, aka "The Robin Hood of Modern* Crime". And no, I am not talking about that one-off movie from 1997 with Val Kilmer. The original Saint movies in the '30's and '40's (e.g., The Saint Strikes Back, The Saint in New York) starred such elegant, debonair chaps as Louis Hayward and George Sanders. Then, in 1962, came the British TV series, starring Roger Moore**--followed in 1978 by Return of the Saint, starring Ian Ogilvy . The Saint, in my opinion, was every bit as classy as James Bond. Although Simon Templar didn't have a license to kill, he still made life complicated for villains all over the world, usually while dressed to the nines...and he treated women a lot more gallantly than 007 ever did. Which is not to say that Simon was all that saintly with the ladies. *The first Saint novel ( Meet the Tiger!, later re-titled The Saint Meets the Tiger) debuted in 1928. Well, he was modern then... **His excellent body of work in this series, which ran 1962-1969, couldn't have helped impressing the producers of James Bond films.
