A highly misunderstood Sci-fi horror cult fave with a nice cast!
Carpenter and Hill disliked writing Halloween 2 and wanted to kill off Michael Myers by having his eyes shot and having him and Loomis burn to death at the end of that movie to end his story. They both had a concept to turn the franchise into a big screen anthology of standalone different Halloween themed stories with each one a fresh villain and new plots in each story oriented around the holiday itself. Kind of like Tales from the Crypt or Twilight Zone or Creepshow.
This was the first and only attempt at that idea! the film has a Lovecraftian tone to it with the idea of technology and witchcraft combined even mixing in androids and a warlock with technology to conduct witchcraft.

I always liked it. It seems to have a cult following now.

I loved this movie, and I really liked the idea of doing a Halloween series of different stories that all took place on that day.
In fact I like to imagine that it's a shared universe; imagine a Halloween 4 that happened the year after the mask disaster (assuming he didn't get the show cut off in time). What a backdrop that would make for!

That is correct, after Halloween II John Carpenter wanted to produce Halloween sequels annually to be put out for every Halloween season, but not with Michael Myers. It was to be done anthology-style, with different Halloween themes each year. Halloween III: Season of the Witch was the one that kicked it off. But because it did not meet box office expectations, the annual Halloween movie idea was shelved permanently.

Oddly, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, is usually considered to be a bad film, because "Michael Myers is not in it"...
When I first saw the movie, it was years after more Michael Myers films had been released, and I was aware of the original concept concerning H3. I kept that in mind when I watched the movie, and in my opinion, I think H3 is actually a good, not great but good, film.
I have to wonder if Halloween III: Season of the Witch would have been received better by audiences if it had been released... as a stand alone film with a different title. Perhaps, something LIKE... Season of the Halloween Masks

I can't remember Silver Shamrock guy's endgame: Kill the kids who put on the masks and watch the video on TV and somehow any adults nearby...and then what?

I still haven't seen it yet, but I remember that it got pretty good reviews when it came out despite having nothing to do with the plots of the first two Halloween movies.
Several years ago on the old I Need to Know board someone described the film and although I hadn't seen it I felt confident enough to throw out Season of the Witch as a possible. Three other posters quickly came in to agree with me and finally the OP marked it solved. Those were good times.

Don't forget the big giveaway at 9 o'clock.
I avoided it when it came out because no Michael Myers in it-but it actually is good that it is a standalone-makes it more interesting now.
His point was to bring about a Druid apocalypse of some kind. Not sure that it was an accurate portrayal of the Druid belief system though. Causing a bunch of ghosts to walk about probably would have made the same point, but then you wouldnt have the snakes coming out of the kid's face.

It's a shame that I didn't like this movie on first viewing and now I hear a lot of praise for it. So far, it's the only Halloween movie that I seen once, but I might rewatch it soon, so I can change my opinion on it for the better. Deep down, I know it's a good movie that did put in effort. I guess that I'm a little biased against it for no Michael Myers.

I can't remember Silver Shamrock guy's endgame: Kill the kids who put on the masks and watch the video on TV and somehow any adults nearby...and then what? They actually address that in the movie. "Why, Cochran? Why?" "Do I need a reason? Mr. Kupfer was right, you know - I do love a good joke. And this is the best ever. A joke on the children. But there's a better reason. You don't really know much about Halloween. You thought no further than the strange custom of having your children wear masks and go out begging for candy. It was the start of the year in our old Celtic lands and we'd be waiting... in our houses of wattles and clay. The barriers would be down, you see, between the real and the unreal. And the dead might be looking in... to sit by our fires of turf. Halloween. The festival of Samhain. The last great one took place 3,000 years ago and the hills ran red with the blood of animals and children. Sacrifices. It was a part of our world... our craft. Witchcraft. To us, it was a way of controlling our environment. It's not so different now. It's time again. In the end, we don't decide these things, you know. The planets do. They're in alignment, and it's time again. The world's going to change tonight, Doctor. I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. And... happy Halloween."
