Is an idiot the world's greatest philosopher? What is "philosopher"? What is "greatest"? What is "world"? What is that apostrophe-s? What is "an idiot"? What is "is"?
And now I, who know next to nought about philosophy, will take my leave.

Is is an illusion.
Perception is reality.
Have you ever had a dream that was so real that when you awoke from this dream it took you a minute to remember what was real and what wasn't?
Whose to say that dream wasn't reality? At least as long as you were asleep that was your reality. How do you measure time? What is the difference in 10 hours or 10 years?
So even if you were only asleep for five hours, it was still reality for a brief moment.
It 'is' impossible to fly. Well it isn't if you're delusional or dreaming. Then again, aren't we flying while Earth is floating in space?
When someone says it 'is' what it 'is', how can you be so sure?

All you need to know about life: "what is is and what ain't ain't" Let the good times roll.

Grammatically speaking, is is the third person present singular of the verb be. In this way, is is a connective word to convey information about a particular subject.
Philosophically speaking, in a natural language such as English, it seems to me that there are three main usage of is: identity - fatpaul is Paul Martin; predication - fatpaul is a bore; existence - there is a fatpaul.
In a formal language such as predicate logic, is is not needed: P(f) - fatpaul is Paul Martin; B(f) - fatpaul is a bore; f - there is a fatpaul.
AFAIK, there is no theory as to why we find these common usages within one word such as is, and it seems in natural language also that we can convey the same information without the word: Paul Martin, a.k.a fatpaul; fatpaul bores; fatpaul exists.
