shannondegrootAye. I know I shouldn't be, I try not to be, but--yes, I am. I admits it, I admits it! With that said, I've stepped on innumerable cracks in my time, walked under innumerable ladders, and passed by innumerable black cats. It's not that I don't do these things, merely that I feel a kind of--er--pang when I do so. Same thing with the number 13. Funny about that. I tend to follow theatrical and sailing superstitions (in general) as well...

What are Your Superstitions? A little bit about numbers, and knock on wood, stuff like that, I try to keep it in check. Good topic, I've often thought about how superstitions start. Someone told me knock on wood started with charlatans selling wood they said Christ was crucified on. oh well, interesting.

alittlebirdie I've got a book on superstitions somewhere around here, but--if I'm remembering well enough without consulting it--it actually started because folklore suggests that spirits living in trees (thus, wood) would grow angry at presumptuous arrogance. I know I've heard the Christ story too, but I believe one of my books suggests it's something of a false etymology (though I'm no expert, naturally, and may be completely misremembering! ).

Hi Salmank, I think I like your version better; "presumptuous arrogance" makes sense because we're afraid of jinxing ourselves. Not to mention I believe in spirits that live in trees.

Not really superstitious, but if I can avoid walking under a ladder or breaking a mirror I will.
