The only time I can think of it happening is seeing Over the Rhine support Ani DiFranco.

These guys Liquid Liquid - opened for the Talking Heads many, many moons ago. I knew who they were and was excited to see them. The rest of the crowd had no idea who they were and, believe me, by the time Liquid Liquid's opening set ended, the crowd was blown away by them and in love with them.
Just click on the link and listen for ten seconds...you'll know why they went over so big:

In 2010 Neil Young played a few benefit concerts here in Florida to replenish the local food banks after they became depleted from too many hurricanes. The opening act was someone named Allen Toussaint. I had no idea who he was. So when the concert began this 72 year-old dude comes out and starts banging away on the piano like you wouldn't believe. And I recognized almost every song. That's because he had written many songs which were made famous by other artists. It was an unexpected pleasure. Toussaint died in 2015. A few of Toussaint's hits... Java - Al Hirt (1963) and later R.E.M. (1995) Fortune Teller - The Rolling Stones (1964) A Certain Girl (1964) - The Yardbirds (1964) and later Warren Zevon (1980) Whipped Cream (aka theme from The Dating Game) - Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass (1965) Working in the Coalmine- Lee Dorsey (1966) and later Devo (1981) Yes We Can Can - The Pointer Sisters (1973) Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley - Robert Palmer (1974) Southern Nights - Glen Campbell (1977) Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette) - Ringo Starr (1978)

The Ex, supporting Melt-Banana at Salford Islington Mill. First time I'd ever heard them, and I just remember thinking that Melt-Banana must be ultra confident to have a support band this good. To be fair, Melt-Banana didn't disappoint either.
Not the gig I was at, but this is fairly representative:

"Ever been blown away by a supporting act that you weren't familiar with?"
No. But only because I've always been OCDish about learning the supporting act's material prior to going to the show (if I didn't know it already). I've seen plenty of great supporting acts though, including lots of legendary bands--Rush, Heart, and Van Halen for example--when they were just getting started.

Took my middle daughter to her first gig 2012 at the the 'Hammy' Apollo to see her then current fave rave Jack White. I personally was blown away by the support act First Aid Kit. Below is an clip from right where we were standing...before Jack came on and the drnk idiots lunged forward into our backs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqdUb1yKSPk

That's not a bad idea and easier to do nowadays with YouTube. I was going to a lot of shows in the 90s and didn't have much access to investigate support acts. I also was generally dismissive to the idea.

I also was generally dismissive to the idea. I went to my first concert in 1968, and I went to a ton of concerts beginning in the 1970s. I simply bought the most recent couple LPs from whoever the supporting act was. I realized early on that I enjoyed rock concerts a lot more if I knew the material beforehand, so I always made sure I knew it. It was kind of like studying for an exam, haha.

Yes. I saw Thievery Corporation in December (sixth or seventh time I've seen them - there were amazing, as usual), and the opening act was a Hip-Hop act from Colorado called The Reminders. They were awesome. I ended up buying a bunch of their music and merch. The Reminders homepage

More times than I can count. I saw these guys at a club 10 years ago or so. When they came out it got dark and they had some kind of blinking strobe light thing going. First few songs were fast paced and energetic. I was impressed.
