4/10. Watchable nonsense with impressively mounted if repetitive monster battles.
Charlie Hunnam, proud recipient of The Julian Sands award for Most Wooden Actor to Consistently Get Work in Major Movies -- and yet he isn't even the most inept performance on display here (Burn Gorman).

I was not the right audience for this movie.

Bags of potential, but I just didn't care for it on many levels. Like for example, at the start we get a voiceover detailing the early years of the Kaiju attacks. And that sounds like a way more interesting story than the one we get!
Then putting most of the action in the dark, so it's very hard to see what's going on. I get that it's cheaper to do the CGI, but your whole hook for this film is "come watch the giant monsters fight the giant robots", and you're flubbing that bigtime if I can't see the damn fights!
I thought the whole "drifting" thing was poorly used. I expected it to be a more interesting and significant part of the film.
All in all I far preferred the sequel. Nowhere near a perfect film, but far better than this one.
