Madden NFL '94 A-Personal bias, I played & loved this for years. More very nice SNES sights & sounds, smooth visuals for its era. 80 teams in all to choose from ftw. EA did a great job with all the player ratings for each team. (I have Madden 08 & they couldn't even use historic player numbers let alone their physical characteristics.) The actual game upon release included a mini poster with all the teams' player ratings... still can't find online fml. Mortal Kombat II A-Great nostalgia, I couldn't not include it for my own system. MK hasn't aged as finely as SFII, & yet this game once I get going feels tight in a good way. Scorpion & Sub-Zero ftw. I've completely forgotten pretty much every special move, need to do homework. The music is awesome. Madden '94 revisit... quirky fun with good pace to it. It does kinda scuk there aren't any stat trackers for the SNES version, other than season standings. Still, my fav NFL game for the SNES because overall presentation & most intuitive gameplay. Maddens 97 & 98 gained depth at the cost of a lot of charm & fun. I like opting for All-Time or SB team playoffs & playing 1 random game per round. Fav thing about Madden '94... memories I guess, this was right around the period I was really getting into the NFL. MKII revisit... less diverse fighting hasn't aged nearly as finely as SFII Turbo, yet still fun with solid balance. Fav thing about MKII... smooth graphics & great sound design, both hold up really well to this day.

Mickey's Magical Quest B+ I know that's not the official title, meh it's what most ppl refer to it as. Very good Capcom Disney platformer in the DuckTales lane - fairly easy challenge offset by fantastic graphics & music. Lot's of fun for casual entertaining fare. Mega Man X A-This is a very cool game, flat out. I'll need to devote myself to get further than I ever have. Doesn't exactly look & feel like MM NES, & yet if it did, what'd be the point? Nice power ups for fun gaming. The colour palette is superb, detail was not mailed in at all. Mickey's Magical Quest revisit... solid Capcom Disney charm, shorter levels than I remembered. Still a nice pure example of SNES development for its time. Fav thing about MMQ... the costumes & quaint play design. There's something quintessential Mickey Mouse about having Mickey in firefighter costume, wizard, or mountaineering. The quaintness of the game really shines in the boss battles, which aren't gimmes yet feel simple. Mega Man X revisit... haven't bit into this one yet, been committed to 1 long platformer at a time. Fav thing about MMX... the first post-NES MM look & feel was executed perfectly. 6 MM games on the NES, there was a lot of familiarity & repetition. MMX design could've been too jarring, yet they aced it.

NBA Jam Tournament Edition ASuperb arcade bball. I usually play with all the options on the table including the high scoring hot spots. Classic roster combos make this nostalgic bliss. Probably the most partying atmosphere a sports title has ever achieved. Orlando for me now... Penny, Horace, & Anderson - 3 bigs, 2 guys who can shoot from the arc. MKD, MCA, ADR, to play as the Beastie Boys ftw. NBA Live '96 A-This was my go to back in the day & it remains awesome. Fast gameplay, deep roster set ups, varied customization options. The 'hidden' HOF player models were always welcome for the likes of Jordan, Chamberlain, Johnson, & Bird. One of my fav gaming intro sequences ever. NBA Jam TE revisit... remains tremendous arcade style fun. Essential SNES era gaming. Fav thing about NBA Jam TE... driving to dunk only to dish out to the arc for wide open 3's. NBA Live '96 revisit... lots of fun, been playing as the Raptors with all unlockable players drafted to their proper teams. A.I. plays a very guard heavy offense, which at the time felt imbalanced, now feels normal to the 2018 style. A bit of a glitch that because while scoring leaderboards reflect reality, when you actually play vs likes of HOF centers & forwards, they're barely scoring. Fav thing about NBA Live '96... super fast gameplay, very cool sound design. NBA Jam style 'fire' mode for either offense &/or defence.

NHL '94 A+Brilliance. I'm a bit speechless because any game that I logged months/years at back in the day & still feels so fresh has to be a masterpiece. I will say that I love the SNES' unique player design here - it's a lot more meticulous than the standard NHL look & feel - stickwork & puck handling is on another level with its intricately tuned play. I used to own the era's final installment NHL '98 & even that felt compromised compared to '94. Doesn't hurt that its Leafs team (Gilmour, Potvin, Clark, etc) was one for the ages, & that so many HOF greats were in their prime to revisit here (Lemieux, Yzerman, Roy, etc). I ran into this the other day... readonlymemory.vg/john-madden-hockey/ & how the creators executed this ideal hockey video gaming experience. Super Bomberman 2 B+Since I played the first into the ground back in the day, I hack added this one for newness. Very solid game, nice single player experience. Always fun for casual semi-mindless gaming. NHL '94 revisit... still exceptional fun. Being able to skip the era's password save system is great for these titles. Fav thing about NHL '94... every team's unique organ music, & watching playoff highlights, which seems silly yet was so cool from its day. Super Bomberman 2 revisit... solid fun, nothing crazy memorable. Nice bells & whistles. Fav thing about SB2... battle mode, melee action.

You rated super star wars high, as I recall. If it didn't have the star wars branding on it, would you rate it lower, or about the same, just wondering.

You rated super star wars high, as I recall. If it didn't have the star wars branding on it, would you rate it lower, or about the same, just wondering. Its excellent sights & sounds put it high. The difficulty of it is aided by constantly being rewarded heart health, not to mention time extended bonuses so you don't even have to speed run to make it, both unlike say a Castlevania game. ESB & ROTJ force powers were the real challenges for me, taking fun away. SESB felt more challenging than even some more insufferable NES impossibilities. SROTJ looked & felt bogged; I prefer SW in space & tech, than marshes & forests while gaming. I've played enough garbage SW games in my lifetime, & SSW executed the SW universe look & feel as best for its era as anything. Without the branding, the likes of it, Disney Capcom, Castlevania, etc... while I'd probably not enjoy them as much perhaps, the production values might not be there either from studios to live up to. Without the branding I'd probably have it lower because there'd be no well done film tie-ins for the characters, settings, music, sounds, & cut scenes... essentially its entire package.

Super Castlevania IV AThis may seem weird, yet I've always preferred NES CV & CVIII to this mostly because of their progressive difficulties + CVIV's dna of showcasing the Super Nintendo's capabilities masking some challenge. Make no mistake, this game is f'n amazing, I simply have more affection for the formers. Having said all that, I recently dove back in & blew through the opening stage. I really like that this chapter plays like a semi greatest hits of its NES era, & the SNES upgrades act like eye candy & unique gameplay for the franchise. I'd slot this third behind III & I, yet it's close. Sim City A+What can I say, for me this game is pretty much all I want in the genre. Future installments added more layered & expansive gameplay, alas for me that took away the pure joy aspect. Sim City 4 I jumped at for PC & yet when it boiled down to having to babysit so many aspects to succeed, I lost interest. Sim City as it was, & esp on SNES with its quaint blocky graphics & whatnot, was akin to playing childhood Hot Wheels or probably more accurately Micro Machines city sets, with progress & development strategies. It's not an overly challenging test once you get its rhythm down, & I love early on beginning to actually care about what I'm building & how it's all progressing. My only minuscule flaw is while I've dabbled with the rom on my PC a few years ago, that ability to minimize & allow the game time to pass in background was a plus... back on the mini now I'll not be able to do, though I suppose I could flip my 'channels' & watch tv while my city grows with age in the background lols. Super Castlevania IV revisit... the 2nd game I played through on the mini after SMW. Pretty f'n excellent, just not as tight as the NES I & III. Early era SNES graphics & sounds on full display... seems to me like early on they were trying to boost the 8-bit experience rather than experiment with more uniqueness available to the hardware? I dunno. Fav thing about SCIV... I love all its mode 7 effects... the rotating hallway is awesome, & the spinning whip hooks being actual gameplay makes it worthy. Sim City revisit... still solid, it's a game I throw on sometimes sans sound while I listen to podcasts. I play random maps & go until the year 2000. The best population I've had since last fall maybe about 375000. Back in the day I only played with the $999,999 cheat mode, now I play true to form. Fav thing about Sim City... trial & error paying off; pre-emptively fending off troubles by learning from past mistakes for a smooth ride.

Street Fighter II Turbo A+Flat out masterpiece, must be in my top 3 SNES titles. I've dabbled it via roms ever since the 90's & it's simply ageless. I laughed when I was at a party years ago playing SFIV & basically took over because of my SFII ability. Plays great, looks great, sounds great, excellent gaming balance, & still as challenging as you make it via 1-10 difficulty option &/or speed rating. With those 2 criteria, it truly is deeper than it shows. Star Fox B+I owned it back in the day & became pretty good at it, so I know it has fairly high highs with any mundane lows it shows. I hadn't played in 15+ yrs last week, remarkable to me how fast the gameplay feels. Shooters aren't my genre, my NES Classic w/hacks has enough for my fix if I need. Some of these levels are really well crafted & pretty pulsating as your ship is ever flying forwards, unable to avoid what's coming but to battle &/or dodge head on. That aspect is underrated I think, with the '3D' polygonal enemies & obstacles nearing your face. Excellent music btw. SF2TE revisit... still tons of fun. Been playing as Ken a lot. 2 stars turbo is my go-to setting. Not a lot else to say, it's f'n timeless. Fav thing about SF2TE... blowing up an opponent out of the gate with combos, perfect score with around 80 seconds left. Star Fox revisit... graphics of course are stuck in the 90's, yet amazingly its tense challenges & game flow are still very cool. Fav thing about Star Fox... the asteroid levels, playing inside the ships to blow them up.

I just noticed my alpha order here is botched - listing from my pdf games manuals files list which I used their initials. Whatevsalad... Star Fox 2 n/aI've played about 3 minutes of it, incomplete reaction. I can tell you it is a strange sensation to be playing a new SNES game in the year 2017. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts BA technical marvel, one of the first games back in the day my friends & I rented, really showed off the SNES' capabilities. The music is quite achievement for such an early release. Alas, this franchise does nothing for me, I've never achieved much with it. I have read lately that it's better to approach it as a timing puzzler than a straight platformer, I suppose I'll try again one day down the road. Star Fox 2 revisit... haven't committed to it yet, I'll need to binge it maybe this summer. Fav thing about SF2... I like the strategy of the map? SGnG revisit... I want to like it more, it simply does not want me to succeed. The first level I've tried to throw it on just for fun to get some practice... I keep getting cheap deaths. Fav thing about SGnG... the music is pretty cool, nice atmospheric sounds.

Super Mario All-Stars A+I wouldn't have added this because NES Classic has the 'true' editions, yet I went ahead for completist reasons & figured since Nintendo threw on Star Fox 2, I'll add SMAS to my own list of 20. Some random thoughts... SMB feels like playing with laser eye surgery & seeing new colours... SMB2 feels like a fun new drug... SMB3 is awesome of course, except I've always laughed they gave Mario a tan - I prefer the NES version of #3. Lost Levels is nice to have with the updated graphics & sounds... I'm glad we got Super Mario Doki Panic because it was a more colourful & exciting jump from 1988 to 1989 as a kid - not the same SMB with new levels, could've been boring. Super Mario Kart A+Absolutely flawless; its flaws whatever they may be add to its ideal charm. This game for me put the Mario ensemble nearly akin to Disney Mickey & co. Its A.I. can still give a run for the money & get under the skin on occasion - which keeps it from feeling fully mastered. Top 3 SNES game for me easily. (MK64 lost something for me with the walls, rails, etc., + longer tracks felt less competitive than shorter & more laps.) Super Mario All-Stars revisit... I've been dabbling with Lost Levels since the game was only ever a rental back in the day. Playing as Mario because I've read/seen horror stories about Luigi's slippery controls. SMB3 I still prefer NES, its unique art design seems downgraded on SNES. Fav thing about SMAS... simply how much of an upgrade all the games look & sound from NES, there were no shortcuts by Nintendo. They still look & feel like shiny new 16-bit platformers. Super Mario Kart revisit... I play this a lot. Perversely I enjoy the A.I. rubber banding & cheapness on 150cc class, even human opponents can't always keep your feet to the fire like that. Fav thing about SMK... Vanilla Lake 1 & 2, I'm pretty f'n excellent at those, nearly flawless most of the time. Fun short tracks, unique obstacles with ice blocks & water.

Plowing on more quickly... Super Metroid A+Yet another f'n masterpiece on this system. This game feels like I'm starring in a movie, & I think it's partially due to its pitch perfect soundtrack wanting me to dig deeper into its adventure. This beast is ageless, & still remains a must play even if you think the entire 16-bit era is child's play. I've never defeated it, maybe in the spring I'll get after it. Super Mario RPG B+Very well done for what it is & wants to be. They hired some notable RPG producers so I've read to create it, certainly can't hurt. It's as close to a casual, relaxing RPG experience as I've found, the Mario gang goin' to town. Super Metroid revisit... like playing a sci-fi movie, only it's f'n perfectly written & scored unlike most Hollywood dreck. Fav thing about Super Metroid... its atmosphere, that's not cliché when it's f'n Metroid. Super Mario RPG revisit... still plays kinda juvenile for me, I'll get to it one day. Fav thing about SMRPG... text/dialogues in a Mario game for the very first time.

Super Mario World A+Whenever I've played SMW, it always feels like a showcase for the SNES, & yet it always goes well above & beyond with nice depth. SMB3 is superior imo, as it's my #1 game of all time, & yet SMW stands strongly on its own without compromise. Yoshi is a great add-on as it were, & the variety of levels & exit paths make it interesting from a to z. Yoshi's Island; Super Mario World 2 A+This is a real gem, pretty near a masterpiece for sidescrolling platforming. The art work is outstanding, as is the actual gameplay which they achieved more freshness & balance to the genre. It's great that we can even play it, it had been on the drawing board for a few years & thankfully they finally ran with ideas to release it. It might've been an all time what if had Nintendo said never mind & simply abandoned its conception. Super Mario World revisit... still excellent, kinda breathtaking considering launch title age. Still, it feels easier & emptier than SMB3 which I prefer. First game on the SNES Classic I played to defeat, was nice nostalgia. I still dabble. Fav thing about SMW... Ghost Houses probably; cool music, quirky stage design with doors/hidden doors/secret areas. Yoshi's Island revisit... peak 2D side scrolling for me. Crying Mario doesn't even bother me anymore, maybe cuz I'm better at the game & not racing through. I only ever previous played it as a rental, now I can really appreciate it for all its might. I really like how it's as much about clearing stages as it is finding & collecting everything, + ability to always go back in like a file folder. Fav thing about Yoshi's Island... Art design. Officially a broken record for me with production quality on the SNES for my fav games. This f'n game though is a beast with its presentation & originality, never ever ever cutting corners. I think it's funny that Tetris Attack & Super Mario World 2 really have nothing to do with their titles... merely inspired by so not to scare ppl away at the time.

Secret of Mana AI remember reading all about SoM & really wanting to own it, intrigued by its Zelda-FF fusion play. I think I simply became distracted by other games & priorities as a pre-teen & never pulled the trigger. I've rom'd it on occasion, of course RPG'ing on a desktop doesn't feel the same. Tremendous effort & nice to see Nintendo putting it in the mini's library. Super Punch-Out B+While the first game is superior, hitting more natural highs as it were, this one is still a lot of fun. It has an arcady look & feel which is appreciated for casual sessions, impressive considering it's a Nintendo house production. Secret of Mana revisit... Still FFIII'ing, though having read more about the game I'm fascinated. It was a Nintendo-Sony CD game axed with their failed relationship, the game was pared down from multiple endings + shortened, along with a less darkened story arc. That's pretty cool actually, conceptual game that still had great life. Fav thing about SoM... that it all feels so intriguing? This game was once a blind buy I never pulled the trigger on. I always read how much of a Zelda-FF hybrid great it was, & I simply stopped gaming before I continued buying new SNES titles. Super Punch-Out revisit... maybe the most arcade'y game on either NES/SNES Classic, I'm too into my baseball-hockey-baskeball-football games for sports fix. Fav thing about SPO... huge on screen characters, very vibrant looking & sounding game.

Super Star Wars AJust about a masterpiece, with only some minor creative missteps (literally & figuratively). ESB was the most difficult of the trilogy, ROTJ while more characters felt to me less aesthetically appealing (probably its danker levels). Nails the SW experience for me, & there are easy cheat codes if you really just want to quit trying & toy around. Super Tennis A+A dare I say beautiful & near elegant execution of a sports game. Looks, feels, sounds like great tennis. I've been playing this title for years, & I've mastered its controls enough for sustained success, though its A.I. can still mess with me. I've always truly appreciated its court designs, grass, clay, & hard surfaces & stadiums... each of course having unique play designs for bounces & speed. Super Star Wars revisit... defeated without any cheats, except the save option of course. Hasn't aged a minute for me. Still a beautiful SW translation which punched so far above what we should've expected at the time. Recall 1992 wasn't exactly prime SW buzz, & still we got these great SNES titles. Fav thing about SSW... all of its true to source sounds, visuals, cues, & production value. Yeah, there are creative liberties to make it an actual gaming story arc. Still, playing this trench battle feels both old school & legendary. Super Tennis... one of my most frequent games right now. Played the circuit as Meyer, now playing the women's as Yuka. I simply LOVE this game. It's neither easy nor difficult, its challenges seem to come & go, even set by set. To me, this game is for SNES as Golf is for NES - relaxing escapism that's a lot of fun to succeed at. Fav thing about Super Tennis... its amazing audio, they absolutely nailed the sounds of tennis for a 16-bit game. Japanese anime/RPG style character design also a shoutout, adds fun flair to the game.

Tetris Attack A+If you know, you know... the crack cocaine of puzzle games. My choice for the most colourful SNES ever made, this game takes over you with speed & thought. Many game options/types to keep things fresh. Its versus mode is hilariously epic. Top Gear 2 B+For me, the last solid racing game of its era. Full screen single player alone makes it better than the first. Deep circuit racing + car upgrades make it more than a flash in the pan. Nice graphics, cool music. Tetris Attack revisit... still manic, still f'n awesome. I don't play as often as NES Tetris. Fav thing about Tetris Attack... beyond the super fun & addictive gameplay, I really love its sights & sounds. Yet another SNES title punching above & beyond production value. Top Gear 2 revisit... this one I opted to hack add in lieu of the TG1, & yet the full screen single mode is the right choice. Weather, full global circuit, & fair challenge is a lot of fun. Still in the infancy of car customization, that's fine. Fav thing about TG2... 16 countries/64 cities, offers up a nice everlasting array of vistas & track layouts.

TMNT IV: Turtles in Time A-The only minor blemish is the nature of its genre - repetitive enemies & combat. I will say this is surely the finest attempt to create more diverse slew of baddies + offset the latter with brilliant level design. While TMNT III still offers the more balanced experience, IV's unique bells & whistles keep it superior. This game sealed the idea for me back in the day that home gaming could (finally) improve on the arcade experience. U.N. Squadron B+Contra with planes. A very forgiving shooter, it's got cool jets to play & battle. Slo-mo is well known for this SNES genre & this game is no outlier. Yet, some of its boss fights actually improve their tension level with the dramatic slo-mo lols. Never being much for the genre (usually dark alien space) U.N.S keeps me with its bright graphics & exciting gameplay. TMNT IV revisit... what's more to say, one of the finest beat'em ups in history. Though as mentioned, I do prefer Batman Returns' sights, sounds, & difficulty to this. Time trial option is interesting. Maybe I do prefer TMNT III because it's more challenging, & maybe it's because it wasn't an arcade translation, rather built from scratch for the NES. A solid tie I guess. Fav thing about TMNT IV... very nice speed & flow to the game. Beyond its great graphics, the game swiftly moves ahead at all times. That makes it more re-playable I think. U.N. Squadron revisit... I play this off/on, & still I can't defeat it. Excellent arcade style game that keeps you wanting more; one of those games if it asked, I'd keep pouring coins into so I could finally f'n finish it lols. Fav thing about UNS... Contra with planes. My fav side shooter of all time, everything about it is top notch, best of all the sounds & cool boss battles.

Zombies ate my Neighbors A-A fun arcade style top down melee adventure. Fun concept & horror nods make it a classic. The mini's save feature makes it more accessible than trying to conventionally finish its 55 levels - continues & passwords I think take away your weapon upgrades, vital for later battles. Zelda 3: A Link to the Past A+Saving one of the very best for last, there's not much unsaid about this one. You name the criteria, & this game nearly aces all of them. While I've played my share of it, I've never really gone far in the dark world... one day* (My fav Zelda is still Link's Awakening for GameBoy - shares Z3's game interface/design, yet adds levity & welcome sense of humour.) Zombies revisit... perhaps the least depth a game of mine, I go to it more for quick sessions. Still a ton of fun & excellent gameplay & design. Fav thing about Zombies... something about it screams 90's nostalgia for me, maybe the genre &/or its look & feel. Zelda 3 revisit... avoiding it until I clear FFIII, I don't want to simply dabble this game. Back in the day, I only ever managed as far as the Dark World... needless to say I have work to do. Fav thing about Zelda 3... everything? lols... Hookshot & boomerang if I have to be specific. Those make life in Hyrule a whole lot more fun & helpful.

I love that game. Super Punch-Out is another favorite. The time trial mode adds a lot of replay value. I recently worked at getting my times for everyone to under 15 seconds.
