Sixteen years after a mobster was assassinated by his own gang, his spirit manifests through his teenage daughter to seek revenge. Starring Piper Laurie and Stuart Whitman. Although it is derivative of The Exorcist, and Piper sometimes shifts into Margaret White mode, Ruby is a fine horror movie. It is bizarre and unusual in terms of storytelling and premise (like the idea of the dead mobster's former cronies being employed at a drive-in run by his moll, working as projectionists, cashiers, etc.). Veteran horror director Curtis Harrington creates a spooky atmosphere, with some nice visual touches. For many years the only version of Ruby that was available on video was the edited-for-TV one. Fortunately the new blu ray release is the original uncut theatrical version, however it is still not the intended director's cut (the ending was changed by the studio when it was first released, much to the chagrin of director Harrington).

I haven't seen "Ruby", but Curtis Harrington sure was a solid, under the radar genre director.

Wow--haven't seen this movie mentioned anywhere in decades--I remember liking it quite a bit, mostly cuz of Piper Laurie

Ruby could have been Harrington's masterpiece, but studio intervention with possession / all-out horror scenes made it a bit confused. Added scenes actually work nicely, they just don't quite fit in with the rest of the story.
Ruby often has a bit similar feeling to early Lynch works like Blue Velvet or Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me in that it seems to happen in a world all its own where everyone's a bit strange and everyone has secrets. Like Harrington's other more personal projects, it also has a melancholic, nostalgic mood that I like very much. Fans of small, weird 70s movies may like it.
