I actually saw them shooting a couple of scenes in downtown L.A. when I worked there. The main draw for me at the time was Detective Dori Doreau played by Anne-Marie Martin who played Hammer's partner but David Rasche as Sledge has grown on me.
I bought the DVD sets and was pleasantly surprised that the laugh tracks had been removed. The creator, Alan Spencer explained that the series was actually a drama.

I liked the Robocop parody they did. Ah yes, where Sledge becomes "Hammeroid"

I thought it was quite funny. One bit that's stuck in my mind is where they're trying to find some gangland boss and sledge's partner says something like "he goes for a massage every thursday" and sledge says "there are thousands of massage parlours in the city" and she says "no, he actually goes for a MASSAGE" and sledge says "Oh, well there's only two or three of those".

I use to LOVE this show. Not sure how it's aged, I haven't seen it in decades.

I watched Sledge Hammer and thought it was great, but I had a feeling that it wasn't going to have a long run. Same for Police Squad, which had an even shorter run.

I think the laugh tracks were only there in the pilot episode, after which they decided to leave it out. Good call. When it was broadcast here in Norway, there were no laugh tracks. Except when I watched the re-run a couple years later, when the very first episode (which I did not catch the first time around) did have that laugh track. It felt very weird and out of place. But from the second (or maybe third) episode onwards, the laugh tracks were gone. And these were broadcast episodes, back in the '90s.

The network, ABC, insisted on the laugh tracks when the series started. The pilot and the next 12 episodes had laugh tracks before ABC relented.

I always liked the show. how can this be a drama show when he does absurd things? and the 80's-early 90's was chock full of things shown on national prime time television that were pushing the bar. Night Court, Profit, the days and nights of molly dodd, 21 jump street, murphy brown, uncle buck [riding on the coattails of the movie]
and don't get me started on the trash tv America liked back then...

True, if THIS were a drama, then Police Squad! is,too... oh, and Fresno (1986).

Both seasons are hilarious and well worth buying, though the individual sets have all the special features and I got them both on Amazon for about $6 apiece. The writing is not as clever as on Police Squad! but it's the next best thing. Not a big fan of 80s comedies but this is an exception.

Anne-Marie Martin is gorgeous and actually very good in this series. My favorite episode centered more on her is Desperately Seeking Dori.

Ah yes, the episode with "stereo Hammers" where Dori has a new persona with shades. Very good episode. Trust me, I know what I'm reviewing.
