IT HAPPENED TO JANE, though set in Maine, was actually filmed in the small Connecticut town of Chester. Actor Max Showalter (who also performed earlier under the name 'Casey Adams') played Ernie Kovacs' attorney. He became so enamoured of the quaint community that he purchased a home there when he retired. A gentle and gracious man, he donated his time and money to local charities and events, and created a performance scholarship for the regional high school that is still ongoing long after his passing. I had the pleasure of knowing him, and we used to lunch together once a month. He used his contacts in the industry to have fundraisers for the new firehouse, etc. -- staging celebrity gatherings at the nearby regional theater that he supported, attracting performer pals Eileen Heckart, Debbie Reynolds and Dana Andrews for an afternoon film screening and audience discussion session. I thought it was set in Maine, but couldn't remember for sure, so when I checked and saw that it had been shot in Connecticut, I assumed that was its site. Doesn't really matter. I like the film a lot. And your story about Showalter is a great one. What a wonderful thing for him to do for his community. And how nice that you were able to become friends with him. I loved him most in NIAGARA. The town looks to be near Hartford, where I have friends, so next time I'm out that way I'm going to take a trip to it. I love all of New England.

Tele -- you mention films made in New England during the Silent era. D.W. Griffith's WAY DOWN EAST was filmed at White River Junction in Vermont, and poor Lillian Gish floated down the Connecticut River in Farmington, CT. Gish floating down the Connecticut River sounds unbelievable (I know it well up near Amherst, Mass). I haven't seen the film, only a few clips of her doing it, in icy weather, without a stunt woman I presume. What a remarkable woman she was. One can only marvel at her longevity, her great spirit, and her gifts as an actress, too. And Lillian suffered from numbness caused by that hand in the icy waters for the rest of her life.

Oh, good God! What a sad thing for her. Those were the days before there were unions and other organizations to control how actors (and animals) were treated. People are still sometimes at risk when filming these days, but what she was asked to do and endure would never happen on a union film in America today. But I know that didn't help her over her long life. What a shame.

Good Will Hunting and Blown Away are set in the Boston/Cambridge area. Both had some scenes filmed at MIT.
Parts of Northwest Passage are set in New Hampshire and Cambridge.

Somewhat New England-related: I always got a chuckle out of the sub-plot in The Seven Year Itch (1955) where Richard Sherman's (Tom Ewell) wife and son are going off to Maine to spend the summer, leaving poor Richard to stay behind in New York City to continue with work. There's a certain hayride in the Maine countryside that plays into the plot... now, obviously it wasn't actually shot in Maine, probably some back-lot in Hollywood, but, having spent several summers in Maine myself, I always get a kick out of that part of the movie.

Cynthia, in my memory this was shot in Maryland and Virginia, and when I look it up that's more or less what I find - with a bit of Long Island thrown in. Can you clarify? I'd love if it were shot in Maine. The image you have presented certainly looks like it could be Maine. Lordie, that was a long time ago. I haven't seen that film since it was released.

Wikipedia lists it in a list of set in New England although yes you correct - it doesn't appear to have been filmed there. I don't have the novel to hand to check location. Sorry. Rewatched the film recently after reading the novel - beautiful film.

Morning, spiderwort. Great classic thread! Who thought to bump it? And I'm also loving the San Fran spin-off from EλΡΟ
ΞΈΞ΅ΟΞ―. I'll have to contribute more to that one later, after the Garth Game (if there's a Garth Game).
