Overall the Original trilogy are generally seen as superior to the Prequels. But one aspect in which fans debate is whether the lightsaber dueling is better in the Prequels. Where do you stand? Do you like the stronger power based duels of the Originals(and the Sequel trilogy)? Or do you prefer the faster and more agile fighting of the Prequels?
Any input is appreciated.

Good thread/topic. For me, I have to go with the OT for both technique and overall tone. The OT has heart/emotion. They pull the camera back (good god PT!) so you can actually see the fight. Each character fights with their own style that is unique from each other. i.e. Vader fights completely different from Luke. Both fight differently than Ben Kenobi. I just love those scenes...although, my one criticism is that Vader/Kenobi fight could have had more tension. While I do love the Maul/Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan fight in Episode 1 (Ray Park really sells that scene), the majority of the fights (excluding Palpatine vs Jedi) are all "show" with very little substance. It really bothers me how much George Lucas cheated the camera and zoomed in on the fighter's faces. I can understand he's trying to convey the emotion of the characters, but it didn't work for me. He should have understood that people can convey a lot just with their bodies - otherwise, things like dance/theatre wouldn't be as big as they are. Pull the camera back so I can see the fight/choreography! Grrrrr. Most of the characters in the PT fight exactly the same way too - just hacking away like they're playing with sticks...I suppose maybe that's why Lucas had to cheat the camera so much. I also would have preferred Yoda to not jump around like he's in Super Mario Bros. game. I don't hate the PT though. There are lot of great aspects to them. I just think the lightsaber fights leave a lot to be desired.

Each prequel film had very different lightsaber duels, as did each OT film. So just pitting prequels vs originals seems silly to me.
In any case, my two favorite duels are Luke vs Vader in ESB and Anakin vs Dooku in AOTC.

I'm really fond of the duels in all of the six of the Lucas films. If I had to pick I would say the prequels, specifically the stuff from Revenge of the Sith.

While I enjoy the Palpatine vs. Jedi fight in Episode 3, I thought they cheated in terms of the choreography. It would have been more interesting if all 4 Jedi had lasted longer in the fight. They died way too easily!

They died way too easily! They didn't. This is a misunderstanding of their inclusion in the scene, which was to emphasize how powerful Palpatine was. The reason their deaths seem lacking is because Palpatine is supposed to have essentially killed them all in a matter of seconds, and somehow the way it played out onscreen took just a half-step too long and sort of made the other Jedi, Fisto in particular, look really pathetic. Like they basically stood there and watched him impale them. My point is: based on what we got you're not WRONG to have that opinion, per se. But you're not right. But -- well, you get my point.

I mean, I understand that George Lucas wanted to show how powerful Palpatine was. I get that. However, we're talking about 3 Jedi Masters who served on the Jedi Council for years and were supposedly strong in the Force themselves. The way they so easily died didn't play off like Palpatine was strong, but made me laugh at how quickly they died. Even a young Obi-Wan in Episode 1 put up a better fight against a Sith than they did (as did Anakin against Dooku in Episode 2). It was disappointing. Also from a fan and franchise standpoint, a 5 person lightsaber battle has never been done before in a Star Wars movie. It would have been cool/interesting to see it play out longer - even if it was only 45 seconds to a minute longer than what we got. Oh well. I guess there's no point in crying over spilled milk...or should I say, blue milk?

I would've enjoyed that, especially if it ended the same way -- with it coming down to Mace and Siddious, etc.

Mr. Plinkett answers this question better than I ever could, so I'll let him take this.

In my opinion: The Prequels' Duels are more accurate. My reasoning: We are dealing with Force sensitive people (Jedi and Sith) who have superhuman reflexes, almost to the point of being able to see things before they happen. When two such beings engage in a lightsaber duel, I expect it to be a fight that no ordinary human could engage in. So it has to be choreographed differently and with more complexity. If such beings also just fight like an Olympic fencing event, or hack away at each other like lumberjacks, then they are no better than ordinary people. Normal people fight like Rocky Balboa, Jedi and Sith fight like Bruce Lee.

OT. I really like the duels with Maul and Grievous but I think most of the other duels in the prequels feel overly choreographed The camera also focuses on faces way too much...

The camera also focuses on faces way too much... Yes! Good god PT! It's like going to a movie opening day and getting stuck in the first row...pull the camera back!

You really think just by backing off a bit it'll create more tension and really amp up how epic the whole thing feels? Ridiculous. ... Okay, maybe they could've peppered in a few more wide shots.

Well, I think it would help in allowing the audience to see the choreography/fight. It's like dance, I want to see what's happening with their bodies. With the lightsaber fights, I want to see the swordsmanship too.
