Cripes, I liked to think that Ragnarok might be able to compete with the Justice League's first film...but now it looks like it's going to happen.
We live in an age where characters DC and X-Fans derided as a B or C Lister (Thor and Hulk) are able to compete with the Justice League. Truly, a bizarre time.
Wondrously bizarre.

This year has seen an absurd TV creature like Donald Trump became US president.
Is it too surprising then that a MCU film - misleadingly called Ragnarok, but really about Fraggle Rock - may beat a DC JL financially?
As they say: Whenever the sun of culture hangs low, dwarfs will cast looong shaddows.

[/quote] You keep saying this like Ragnarok is supposed to be the absolute ending to the Norse gods...even in the original myths it never was. Ragnarok has always been about just the ending to one cycle with the survivors moving on to rebuild elsewhere.

Wagner's Götterdämmerung). The point: Because of the grim content and deaths, mythological Ragnarök naturally isn't a silly comedy and joke clobber fest, thus Thor: FraggleRock. Only Marvel could be so low to infuse a heavy dosage of lowbrow comedy and random 80s pop elements (including synth!) into a stale franchise to beef it up commercially. But it worked, the MCU sheeple will like it bleating Meeeeh, moooar Maaaaarvel...

Well that's happened all around. Deadpool who really is a C lister and which didn't open in China made more money than Spider-man Homecoming when you remove it's Chinese gross. Suicide Squad out grossed Captain America Winter Soldier. Guardians of the Galaxy outgrossed Man of Steel. Wonder Woman domestically outgrossed Captain America Civil War which was essentially an Avengers movie.

SS used big names like Joker and Harley Quinn and a cameo from Batman to get audiences. WW had the artificial boosters, but I've been over that.

Create a Thor movie that merges several storylines and juggles them well enough along with ending one cycle of Asgard and get rated fresh.

That it was actually released in the dump months makes it even more impressive, it was also a R rated movie which limits audiences and the character is largely unknown. Spider-man released after Wonder Woman and it continued to do well itself because the competition severely underperformed. It also an appearance from Iron Man as well. Wonder Woman's success had nothing to do with "artificial boosters" whatever that is. Civil War had reviews that were just as good. That movie had Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-man, Black Panther, Ant-man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon, War Machine, and Winter Solider and it still made less than Wonder Woman on her own domestically.

That it was actually released in the dump months makes it even more impressive, Not really, a good movie in the dump months has it easy because of all the stinkers around it. Like how WW was considered good just because the prior DC films all stunk. It had a very low budget too, meaning it would be easy to earn the money back. If anything, the Iron Man appearance was held AGAINST the movie... It got a boost from being the first decent DCEU film, merely decent. But because of how bad the prior films were this meant that WW somehow was a classic. Also the political stuff at play, reviewers going easy because it was about a classic Female Superhero and directed by a woman and stuff (same reason the Female Ghostbusters movie got an easy time from critics despite the fan backlash), etc. Civil War had people ready to dislike it from the start. Yet it persevered.

formersamhmd1. February is the worst month of the year for movies, no movie has it good there which is why it's a dump month. It being more profitable is another thing entirely. Deadpool, who is an obscure character, whose previous movie appearance was panned, who had a low budget, R rated movie made more money than Spider-man Homecoming. And that involved an A list superhero everyone knows, a vastly bigger budget, is part of the MCU and had another A list Superhero in it with Iron Man. Deadpool did better than it. 2. Wonder Woman wasn't considered a good movie because the other ones weren't, it was just a plain good movie. People didn't rush out to see it just because it was some exception because the others already made a ton of no way of themselves. That movie didn't get good reviews just because it was a female superhero movie. There are other Fe ale superhero movies, Wonder Woman wasn't anything new.

formersamhmd 1. February is the worst month of the year for movies, no movie has it good there which is why it's a dump month. Hail Caesar? Black Panther? Spidey had more negativity attached. People weren't happy he was played by someone who looked like a kid and weren't happy Iron Man was in it (even if only for 10 minutes). It was decent. But when you put something decent next to clearly bad stuff...the decent looks better without really being better. It was the first decent one too. Like I said being decent next to bad stuff means your stuff looks better without actually being better. WW had a twofer for being the first decent DCEU film and female hero film.

formersamhmd1. Hail Caesar bombed... 2. Who were these people? Spider-man is a kid, I never saw anyone complain about that or especially that Iron Man was in it. Iron Man's inclusion certainly didn't negatively affect its box office. 3. Man of Steel was already decent and was generally liked by audiences so Wonder Woman wasn't the first at all.

Didn't Get Out! ship in February? 2. A lot of people complained about Spider-Man being a kid and Iron Man's inclusion in Homecoming - they're still complaining. Hee hee hee...
