Just seen Logan-some and thought that the acting of the 3 main characters, Logan-some Charles and a Laura was superlative. However what has actually happened to the rest of the mutants from Wolverine's era? Why are he and Charles the only 2 left?

I had the feeling Prof. X had one of his ceisures while connected to the mutants in Cerebro. The result was kiĺling all the mutants.

There was a reference to a previous incident in WESTCHESTER ( if you remember from the previous movies, the School for the Gifted run by Professor Charles Xavier was located in Westchester, NY) -- about 7 people dead and hundreds injured. Maybe Charles had one of his first seizures which could have resulted in 7 dead mutants, and maybe injury to the mutant kids training there?

The film does make more than one reference to the Westchester Incident (Westchester being where Xavier's School was located), which I believe happened a year before Logan takes place. It's alluded to that Xavier accidentally killed the X-Men with one of his seizures;
Pierce mentions that "It's a shame what happened back East"
The radio report after Xavier's casino seizure mentions the Westchester incident and how 600 civilians were paralysed and several lives were lost including the X-Men, then Logan switches the radio off.
And then from Xavier himself when he talking about how he did something unspeakable: “I remembered what happened in Westchester. This is not the first time that I’ve hurt people. Until today, I didn’t know. You didn’t tell me, so we kept on running away from it. I think…I finally understand you.”
So from these things we can assume that Xavier was responsible for killing the X-Men. A nice deviation from the Old Man Logan comic where Wolverine was the one who killed all the X-Men.
Another thing that happened before and during Logan was that Richard E.Grant's character, Dr.Rice created a formula that would suppress the mutant gene and was placed in the genetically modified corn syrup that his company was producing; which was another reason why no new mutants were being born naturally.

Well I'm confused. I'm not a comic book fan, knew nothing of X-Men till the first film came out, and of the Old Cast ones I've only seen that plus Wolverine. However, I'm a great fan of the New Cast reboots - McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence et al. The way I understood it, in those films they rewrote history - when Logan went back to the 70's in 'Days of Future Past' he straightened things out so that once he came back he came back to a future where all the mutants are alive.
So my problem is: does everything that happens in 'Logan' take place a long time after DOFP - or, did the events of that film create a new, alternate timeline (as in the 'Star Trek' reboots) which would mean the in that timeline, all the mutants are still alive, the school is open and functioning etc and events of 'Logan' take place in the old timeline??

Logan takes place in it's own universe. It has no connection to the other movies.
