Anybody else watching this show and enjoying it? I'm really enjoying Emily Hampshire's work on 12 Monkeys. I've seen a lot of shows where there's a 'crazy' character type, and I've felt that only a handful have succeeded in playing the roles convincingly - as there's more to it than just spouting 'crazy talk'. I feel that Emily's performance has succeeded where quite a lot fail and she's not just acting 'nuts'/saying a whole bunch of nonsensical gibberish. I think there's a lot more to her character and Emily's put her own spin on the role. Having said that, I can see slight hints of Brad Pitt's portrayal from the movie - not so much that it's copying him, just enough to acknowledge the previous incarnation of the role. I'm glad to hear she's been bumped up to regular status in the show for next season. Looking at her IMDB list of credits, it appears she's been in loads of stuff...just none of which I've seen, sadly - which is odd, considering when I first saw her on the show, I felt she looked strangely familiar to me. As has been mentioned elsewhere in regards to who she 'looks like’, I think on different occasions/from certain angles she alternates between resembling Kate Mara and Tatiana Maslany (in fact, her role as Jennifer kind of reminds me of a non-Russian and slightly-less-crazy Helena from Orphan Black). I find her utterly captivating, heartbreaking and hilarious – all in equal measure. I’ve just seen the first two episodes of Season 3 and I thought her 1920’s one-woman show in France with her recreating scenes from classic movies was one of the funniest things ever (and that’s saying a lot, given that every season, and almost every episode she’s in, she has some amusing moments), as was her play about the 12 Monkeys. I like that her character cobbles together all these different pop culture references and combines them to make pop culture reference salad (another example of this was her speech from last season which combined speeches from The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Braveheart and Independence Day). Though I think my favourite part came from the second episode of Season 3, when she did her ‘distraction dance’.

I've been watching this show from the start, and have liked all the seasons, but season 3 was for me the most enjoyable/entertaining.

Yes. I like '12 Monkeys' and I am a fan of Jennifer Goines too. I am currently waiting for the final season (Season 4) to start airing here on the Syfy Channel and I remember reading they were going to air both Season 3 and 4 this year but it doesn't look like that is happening anymore and sites are saying it is going to air in 2018.
By the way, if you are a fan of the actor who played Ramsey (and Charlie in 'Fringe') and was disappointed his character was killed off he is going to be the main villain (Richard Dragon) in 'Arrow' Season 6.

I'm pleasantly surprised this show has maintained its quality through the first two seasons, and I hear the third but I'm reserving judgement. I tend to find Jennifer a bit annoying, although her pop culture references are always funny. I'm kind of confused by the 12 Monkeys whole plan, although with The Witness behind them it appears he orchestrated events to play out the way they did so he'd get conceived.

Well, I'm only two episodes into Season 3 so far, but I'm still enjoying it. I might not fully understand every single little thing that's happening, but at least it hasn't confused me enough (yet) that I've had to go online to find out what the heck is going on (which I had to do with at least one show I watched previously).

I guess it just comes down to personal taste and how you feel about the actress. I can understand how Jennifer's character might annoy some people (I myself have found some characters in other shows to be annoying while seemingly everyone else has loved them), but I just think Emily Hampshire throws herself completely into the role and stands out in every scene that features her - in a good way (at least for me).

I thought with the way you were talking about the show you had already seen every episode of Season. Don't worry. I will not say a word about the rest of the series. I am keeping my lips sealed.

Not to worry, DebLovesBeccy. I'd actually already sort of 'spoiled' myself by reading a comments section for the first four episodes of the season elsewhere prior to seeing your post, so it's all good. I don't know the 'details' surrounding what happens, just who does the deed...and that's about it. But please don't hesitate to keep discussing the show. There are two previous seasons' worth of stuff to talk about and in a few days I should be up to the part you mentioned. The show's worth discussing, so please feel free to.

I was disappointed by 2163, I figured there'd be something significant there but there wasn't - it was pretty much the same as 2044. It was clear to me Chalice had just started watching season 3 - nice spoiler that Ramse dies this season.

It's a good show overall but Jennifer Goines is simply brilliant. Woefully overlooked in greater pop culture.
I watch her on Schitt's Creek and while she is regularly the best thing there too, you just see how woefully underused she is there.

I got to watch episodes 3 & 4 last night.
**spoilers for those^ two episodes below if you haven’t seen them (especially episode 4 - you've been warned)**
Firstly, I just want to say how much of a fan I am of Alisen Down as Olivia (or ‘Striking Woman’ as she was credited as in the early episodes of the show – a very apt name, btw). I know her character’s done horrible things, but I just find her captivating to watch. I mainly remember Alisen Down from the TV series Mysterious Ways and as Lex’s mother in Smallville, but I’ve seen her in a bunch of things and she’s one of those cases of “Hey, it’s THAT person!” recognition (which happens with certain actors/actresses that you see in seemingly *everything*). She’s just so mesmerizing with the way she talks, I find.
Also...Olivia’s apparently one tough woman, going through the splinter torture and being stuck in a box, surviving only on rats, for 3 months. I know a lot of people were probably cheering on the fact that she was taken down a few pegs after that and she eventually gave up information, and while I’m on the ‘good guys’ side and want to see them win, it’s always a bit of a conflicted feeling when I see a villain I enjoy broken down and their overconfidence shattered – but at the same time, from the good guys’ perspective, I can understand them needing any sort of ‘victory’...even a small one. I liked that some of them thought the splinter torture was too much.
Secondly, I still love Jennifer Goines. She wasn’t featured as much as in the first two episodes of the season, but she still made an impression and got some amusing moments (like her sleeping in the splinter chair - that’s built for time travel - then being told to go sleep elsewhere and her calling the guy 3PO, as well as her telling Olivia that her spirit animal is ‘turducken’ and all her different words for BS. Also...bread puns!). I forgot to mention this in my original post about the first two episodes of the season, but I really liked Jennifer telling everyone off for how they treat her, and then Cole actually making an effort to treat her better later on. I like their relationship. It isn’t ‘romantic’, but I think it’s very enjoyable.
And lastly, I’m not sure how much knowing about Cole taking out Ramse before watching the episode affected the impact of it for me, but I still found it pretty effective. I knew it was coming, and kept waiting for it to happen, so when it did – the main surprise was how it happened, with Cole just wanting to make Ramse stop moving (after having told him to 'stop' umpteen times). It seemed to me more a ‘reflex thing’ (like, “I have to stop him moving forward.”, rather than him just thinking, “Yeah, I shoot you now!”).
Even if I hadn’t been aware of this seemingly being the end for Ramse prior to watching the episode (I say ‘seemingly’, because given that time travel plays a major part in the show, there’s no guarantee we won’t see him - at least for a cameo – by the end of the series), the flashbacks to younger versions of himself and Cole would’ve been a pretty big hint – as it oftentimes seems to be the case in shows that flashbacks to a certain character’s childhood happens in the same episode they’re written out.
I will say that Ramse’s final moments with Cole were effectively played by both actors. I was never that attached to Ramse. I mean, I liked him well enough in the first season, but then he became all obsessed with his son and backstabby – which just bored/annoyed me (and he wasn’t particularly smart in this episode either, offing someone from behind who he thought they were Cassie...despite the fact that it was so obvious it wasn’t her, even the way the woman walked gave that away. You’d think he’d make certain who he was shooting before doing so). However, I did find his final exchange with Cole (and Cole’s reactions) quite emotional. Especially effective was Cole’s final “Brother.” that he uttered. If this is indeed Ramse’s/Kirk Acevedo’s last episode, then I’ll just say that I will miss the ‘brotherly’ moments between him and Cole. This is also the second show I’ve watched were Kirk Acevedo’s character has come to an unfortunate end (the first being as Charlie in Fringe).
I was so happy to see Cole reunited with Cassie at the end. These two are at their strongest together, I think, as I really enjoy the chemistry between them.

I guess Ramse was done as a character, since he'd gone from being Cole's friend to his enemy then back to his friend and now, well enemy perhaps isn't the right word, but having an ulterior motive of killing Cole's love - that and with him finding his son then seeing him die, there wasn't much left for Ramse to do. Still quite a scene between Cole & Ramse and somewhat surprising Cole would kill his friend like that.

Yeah, I agree. It would’ve just been repeating the same cycle over and over again if he’d continued on, I think. While he may have done/been going to do 'bad' things, it was at least somewhat understandable from his character’s perspective why he did those things/was willing to go to those lengths. Though that doesn’t mean I wanted to keep seeing it happen, so I’m fine with them now moving on from that.

It was indeed quite a scene. Very well-played between both actors, I thought. Like I can understand Ramse’s actions from his perspective, I can also understand Cole’s actions from his. And as I mentioned before, I think his mind was just operating on the simple “Must. Stop. Ramse.” thought process. Obviously he could’ve just shot him in the leg or somewhere else that slowed him down, but he was probably just so overcome with feelings of betrayal and acted on instinct.
Then again...Cole *did* say that he’d figured what Ramse was up to quite a while beforehand, so maybe his shooting of his friend wasn’t so ‘spur of the moment’ and was in fact more ‘calculated’? I’m not sure now. I think Cole probably would’ve liked to have taken Ramse alive, but he left Cole little choice but to take care of him for good. He’d just switched sides one too many times, I think. As much as I mightn’t have liked Ramse’s character at times, I’ve always liked Kirk Acevedo (as I did on Fringe).
Obviously this^ is just my interpretation of events. Others may well feel differently.

**spoilers below for episode 5 (though not really for episode 6) if you haven’t watched yet** I saw episodes 5 & 6 together, one of the other, so I might have gotten them slightly mixed up, but I think I mainly remember the fifth episode because it was so much fun (though perhaps less so if you’re not a fan of Jennifer Goines). The caper, Jennifer explaining everyone’s part in it, and my personal favourite moment: Jennifer’s voice being heard through Olivia’s mouth (kudos to Alisen Down for totally emulating Emily Hampshire-as-Jennifer-Goines-speaking-through-her. Sometimes lip-synching with another actor’s voice is…not done well/’off’ with the mouth movements, but she completely nailed it). And for anyone who doesn’t like Olivia, I’m sure they got a kick out seeing her (even if it wasn’t *really* ‘her’) get electrocuted by the fence at the end of her Jennifer speech. I love that Jennifer’s not only amusing herself, but allows the other characters (who are usually so serious) to get to be funny too – she brings ‘light’ to the grim/dark’ atmosphere (I also get a kick out of her always saying ‘Jonesy’ – and Jones’ telling her not to eff up was great). Her pop culture references continued to amuse, with the mentioning different heist movies and also Clue. I liked the Scooby-Doo style of them popping their heads up, Cassie as Jennifer’s ‘assistant’ and the ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ entrance with all of them in 80’s fashion. Of course Jennifer rocked whatever ensemble she was wearing. But Cassie’s hair! Goodness... And was Cole wearing something similar to Marty McFly from Back to the Future? I also liked Cassie making off with the painting and her constant exasperation at Cole’s ‘helpful’ suggestions of “Have you tried retracing your steps?” (“These are my steps!”). It was nice to get to see the two of them have a few ‘lighter’ moments since everything is usually so ‘heavy’ with them. Older Jennifer and young Jennifer together were great (also Jennifer and her two tortoises from different time periods were great – and avoiding them going ‘boom’ thanks to causing a paradox). I’m not usually a fan of Deacon, but he was used alright here. Especially he and Cole fighting and then separating/playing it cool as Cassie entered (acting like kids caught getting into trouble by a grown-up). Good on him also for mentioning how 'selfish' Ramse was regarding putting the world in jeopardy for his kid (telling young Jennifer her dad was an a-hole – right in front of him – was good too). As funny as the episode was, there were some nice ‘quieter’ moments between Cassie/Cole and Cassie/Jennifer. I liked Jennifer’s reasoning for not wanting to change what happened to her because it fashioned who she was ‘now’ and didn’t know who she’d be if she wasn’t that. I also liked that she later covered for Cole/Cassie in regards to Jones finding out about The Witness being their kid. The three actors did such a good job with just the looks between them. It made her even more awesome.

Thanks for sharing your review Chalice. I agree with you about younger and older Jennifer being great together on screen and I liked the episode last season when we got to see present Jennifer and Jennifer from the future together too before she was killed off and it is a shame we didn't get to see them together more but having one Jennifer is fun enough. Olivia is a creepy character and I might be wrong about this but I have a feeling she could turn out to be Cole's Mother. I can't remember what episode it was revealed in but are you up to the episode where they revealed who 'The Witness' is and what do you think of the reveal? I won't spoil it for you if you aren't but you will know by the end of the season. Also have you watched the '12 Monkeys' movie with Bruce Willis?

I was puzzled by the age difference between the Pallid Man & his father, that is the 79 year old Christopher Lloyd and the young Pallid boy who appeared under 10.

Well, I watched episodes 7 & 8 the other night. **spoilers below** As usual, because the episodes ran together and my memory is rather dodgy, my thoughts on them will probably be a bit all over the place. From the first of the two episodes, I remember enjoying Jennifer and Cole together. His encouraging her to flirt with the guy, which she proceeded to do, was rather amusing. Also, I’ve always thought Emily Hampshire had a certain resemblance to Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black, and while I wouldn’t say they look a lot alike, there are certain times where I think they do look sort of similar. One such example being how Jennifer was dressed in the episode and, to me, looked like how Tatiana did when playing Alison. If you don't agree...fair enough. I also thought Amanda Schull did a really good job conveying all of Cassie’s feeling when she got to interact with her mum who she’d lost long ago. Just watching her watch her mum as she talked, blissfully unaware of how major this was for Cassie, was really interesting. I thought Amanda said a lot with the how she was simply looking at her mother. To me she seemed to just be so happy to *be* there with her. They were really good together. I’m glad Cassie got to hug her mum and suggest to her she take her daughter to the museum. Cassie also kicked major butt when she activated the self-destruct mode on the splinter vest that evil redheaded woman was wearing. That was certainly a cheer-worthy moment. From the other episode, I really enjoyed Cassie teaching Cole to dance. Sure, we’ve seen a similar scene in lots of different shows/movies, but what made me like this one so much was how much more at ease Cassie seemed. She was joking, light-heatedly teasing Cole’s awkward dancing and smiling/laughing. There were so many little funny exchanges in that montage, and I loved seeing her mimic his way of dancing and how he’d be spilling water all over the place if he were balancing one on his head (as Cassie suggested he imagine himself doing while trying to dance). Their other funny montage was with the pickpocketing...and how Cassie wasn’t very good at it (at least to begin with). I’m so glad we get these ‘lighter’ moments with the two of them, as they have so much bad stuff that they go through, it’s nice to see them being happy/having a bit of fun together. Jennifer, of course, was awesome in this episode (I don’t think she’s capable of not being awesome). It started with her and Dr. Lasky – how she and he agreed with their ‘nays’ on the subjects of Olivia and their friends being killed. I hadn’t really had an opinion on Lasky one way or the other before this scene, but he proved himself pretty awesome with how he said he’d have to be held at gunpoint to get away with helping Jennifer go back in time. I loved her finger gun and sound effects she made, as well as Lasky’s deadpan “Oh, no, I fear for my life.”, but the best part was her giving the middle finger (on both hands) to Jones and Deacon as she was sent back in time. I really hated seeing Jennifer locked up in the fenced-off area that Olivia had been. Seeing Jennifer upset is the worst thing ever. I was not expecting Gaius Baltar from Battlestar Galactica to turn out to be Cole’s and Cassie’s grown up son (I must’ve missed seeing his name in the guest star credits - though more likely I just don't know the actor's name off by heart as yet, despite having seen him in several different things).

I just finished season 2 and I loved the season, even more than season 1. The last episode was fantastic and really was point where I realised how much I care about these characters. No spoilers to people who haven't seen it, but the final scene of season 2 is incredible. Talk about perfect set design/costume design/cinematography. I love it when a tv show makes twists and turns like that. There have been so many time travel related shows that it's easy to predict some of the twists, but it's rare for these kind of shows to still surprise me once in a while with fantastic plot twists that aren't just there for the 'shock factor', but actually feel like a key piece of the puzzle that already started with the very first epsiofe.

What also really surprises me is how well the time travel story still holds up at least after 2 seasons. Most of the time things about time travel become illogical after a while, but no matter how many jumps and alterations they make the story as a whole still works and that's very impressive. I can't imagine how big a map would be of the entire story with all the jumps and changes made. The events from season 1 already feel so long ago and distant.
