You should watch the Saturday Night Live episode that he hosted in the '70s. He may have been up in years, but the musical finale was incredibly energetic.

He was a multi-talented star and a master showman. There aren't many others like him.

I've been trying and searching the net for that SNL Finale, but so far without luck...
found this clip from 1970 though:

I have read many times that he was the creative force behind "I Love Lucy".

I have read many times that he was the creative force behind "I Love Lucy". Lucy even said that on the occasion of his death if I remember correctly.

I Love Lucy was a radio show first titled My Favorite Hisband, without Desi.

I have read many times that he was the creative force behind "I Love Lucy". Lucy even said that on the occasion of his death if I remember correctly. She was saying that pretty freely even before his death. She said he did all the work, and all she had to do was show up and be crazy lucy. He invented the three camera set up, re runs, oversaw the script, produced ... his memory was so good he never needed more that one read of the script to have it down. Lucy was never one to denigrate her own contributions ,and she took credit for her success. But that makes it all the more meaningful that she credited Desi with so much of the creation of the series in those early years.

Trouble is, on all her subsequent series, she played variations of Lucy Ricardo. Especially her last one, LIFE WITH LUCY, where she was clearly too old for that kind of characterization.

Lucy became the bigger star long term, but Desi set a lot of that up. I'm not saying he was the sole creative force behind the first Lucy show, though he did build up the Desilu production company into a major player in the world of independent TV production. Just about every interview I've ever read with anyone who ever worked with Desi has said pretty much the same thing: the man was a dynamo.
