I gotta disagree. Viggo has proven in other movies he's quite the performer. He has the gravitas to play kingly. I'm gonna count this up to the directing. I think Peter Jackson was too focused on having Aragon be conflicted that he forget to show the king beneath the ranger.

I would've wanted to see more of the regal, kingly side of Aragon. We got to see the ranger plenty, but not the king. I certainly wouldn't have had him decapitate The Mouth of Sauron. A king should know better than to kill the messenger. Even an evil one. The Mouth of Sauron scene in the EE for Return of the King is probably my least favorite part of the Jackson LOTR trilogy. I didn't like the design of the Mouth of Sauron or what Aragorn did to him. Imo at least, BB ;-)

If I changed anything, I would cast Adrian Paul as Boromir, instead of Sean Bean. Not because I don't think Bean nailed the part, he did. It's just that I would have liked to see AP in a blockbuster or a successful mainstream movie. I read that he actually auditioned for the role of Aragorn. As much as I like AP, I can't say I'm sorry his missed out. VM was excellent in the role, but playing Boromir would have been a good consolation prize for AP I always wanted to see him play Bond, but now he's too old and it doesn't look like Craig will be leaving the role anytime soon. I thought that Highlander Endgame would be a good breakthrough movie for him. But, it wasn't. I like the movie (its one of my favorites as a matter of fact not because it was all that great, but because I can see how much better it could have been if certain changes had been made). Right now AP seems to be making straight to DVD movies one after the other, but its not to late for him to do more.

I think Peter Jackson was too focused on having Aragon be conflicted that he forget to show the king beneath the ranger. And I must respectfully disagree with this. I've also seen Viggo in other films, and frankly, I'm not that impressed.

I can't help but think that the Two Towers would've better if they simply followed the book where the Hobbits meet Gollum, are forced to trust him, are ultimately betrayed by him and then face Shelob in the climax resulting in the fantastic cliff hanger of Frodo being captured.
By using fewer chapters the movie version relegates Frodo to a B story, which always felt wrong to me. It also destroys the great story arc mentioned above, and is thus forced to make Faramir into the antagonist. And as much as I truly love Gollum in the movie and the arc that they give him, the book is more suspenseful because we are mostly viewing Gollum from the Hobbits' perspective rather than the film version where we know his intentions long before Frodo ever does.
Of course it works great as is, and the decision makes perfect sense given their (wise) choice to omit Sauruman's invasion of the Shire. Had they gone all the way to Shelob's Lair in TT the Hobbits wouldn't have had much to do in RotK. I just wonder if TT would've been better had they done things more faithfully to the source material.
Awesome awesome movies though. Some of the best ever made. I actually feel guilty criticizing them in any way.

It's been awhile since I've watched the trilogy, so there might be other scenes, but the Witch-King breaking Gandalf Staff in Return of the King Extended Edition really bugged me.

Nope. It's all virtually perfect.

The only change is a technicality - having Pippen riding out with Gandalf at Minas Tirith.
It was (cg?) filmed I guess to coincide with their initial arrival to the city. Its actual fated place in the film turned out to be out of place &/or irregular.
Surely they could've fixed that for home release. Not a huge deal, one even PJ points out on commentary.
Editing, I'd probably try to pare down the Ents with Merry & Pippen a tad. Re-watching TTT EE that's always noticeably slow.

1. I would have left the Boromir flashback in TTT. Unlike most fans, I liked Faramir's portrayal, at least in the EE where you can see where he's coming from. But yeah, I'm glad PJ dialed back on the characters able to resist the ring's power.
2. I would have moved Saruman's death to the end of TTT. It would given the film more of a conclusion, plus ROTK was packed enough.
3. Cut a few of the endings from ROTK. I don't think we need to see Sam's wedding for one, since we can put together they're a couple when Sam goes home to her and their kids.
