I don't think you "have to" in order to understand a single series. It doesn't hurt, because it helps provide some nuance, and context to certain things, especially when they reference another character or events that happened on another show. Conceptually, it's interesting to think about the nature of the shows as taking place on a larger scale, but individually they're all pretty self-contained; even to the point where it can be easy to forget the interconnectivity of it all.

You don't have to watch all of them to understand the show as stargazer1682 mentioned above but there are some crossover episodes like the upcoming 'Crisis on Earth X' event and last year's 'Invasion' where you have to watch all four shows or it won't make any sense and you will be left with questions.
